If OU matches LSU's deal ... how does that help Riley win a natty at OU??

Lincoln Riley has a $10m buyout

Just pointing that out. It used to be about $4m but went up with his recent raise/extension

Maybe LSU still makes it happen, I hope so, just pointing that out for those that aren’t aware

He should have been able to pull a great DC for OU as well, but somehow that has never happened. Maybe he picks DCs with the same skill as O.

That's my big worry. Grinch had one year where his defense was acceptable for where OU is at as a program, but OU is back to "whoever has the ball last wins" football already. Grinch was respected, but he's not good. Maybe it's a one off, but a bit unsettling when where we want to be as a program means churning through coordinators every 2 years because they either get an NFL job or a college head coaching job. Still clearly the best hire if he'll come, but not a complete slam dunk.

Chump change, compared to what LSU is already paying in buyouts! Hell, that's a bargain.

I assume you meant has little baggage with him? Or did you mean he has known baggage but it's relatively minor? I'm not aware of any public scandals with Lincoln Riley and he seems pretty young to have had to bury any bodies.

Perhaps my standards have lowered the past season and a half, but I'd take Grinch over what we've seen from Pelini and Jones all day, every day.

He might be referring to that hooker Riley killed, but she was pretty ugly so nobody cared.

I think "coordinators I'd take over Pelini and Jones" is setting the bar a tad too low.

Neither Riley nor Kiffin has ever fielded a big time defense.

That is slightly concerning. And that probably has to do with philosophy. Obviously, both feel outscoring your opponent is the way to win. Which isn't wrong in today's college game.

Neither have ever had the type of players LSU usually has on defense. Maybe they've had a stud here or there, but not a roster full of 4 and 5 star DBs and DLs like LSU has traditionally been able to recruit.

Les Miles ruined this program. We're so scared of having no offense we're willing to go full Fun N' Gun for it.

Lincoln Rileys defenses typically suck...sooooo...yeah. Fun.

Kiffin maybe at UTenn in '09.

But your concern is legit. Riley would make a great OC. I get the impression he's more comfortable in a shoot-out than a blow-out. It took him a full 4 seasons to realize he needs to get better on defense.

The game has changed. Top five teams aren't going to be giving us 9-6 overtime thrillers any time soon. And I do miss that. I can't understand the people that found those defensive masterpieces boring. The tension would just build and build.

I’d be happy with Riley but $11-$12M is outfrickingrageous for a coach with less accomplishments than the one we fired.

Who is winning today and why? What is the common denominator of a great teams? Great QB play. Which coaches currently have the best track records of consistently drawing top 5 QBs? It’s a short list, but Riley is at or near the top.

The concern is whether he can recruit at an LSU level consistently, especially on defense. He’s done a pretty damn good job with classes at OU in a state with a much shallower talent pool and another P5 school to contend with. They do trend toward offense, but his DC will have a lot easier time pulling better talent from LA.

On this topic, one point that should be non-negotiable: Riley can’t bring Alex Grinch with him. Grinch looked like he had OU’s D moving in a positive direction, but they’ve taken a big step backward this year. It has to be someone better than him.

OU has stiff competition to recruit in Texas for defense

Why isn’t he winning thos recruiting battles? Does Saban, Day, or even Jimbo now lose those battles? The answer is no

That’s what they said about saban in 2000 when we hired him for what was an astounding 1.2 million.

With our talent, he’ll be close. Besides, it’s all about the playoffs. It’s a bigger field and we can get a shot almost every year with our talent

Curious is LSU paying his 25.2M buyout? Bc that's what it is.

The buyout number if he’s fired vs if he chooses to leave are two different things. If he leaves the number is a mere 4.5 mill I believe.
