How is he striking out if he only offered two guys, who doesn’t want to relocate. Kelly probably knew they would stay but he still reached out to them. To be honest he just needs a OC , he can win with the rest of the staff

It's the truth. I have faith he'll find someone but it seems like pulling from his old staff is going to be a challenge.
there isn't anything surprising those. Some are ND alums and Freeman didn't want to come last year. Plus they are waiting to see if they get promoted.

Give it a minute

LSU would do well to get Elston. He’s the best assistant on that staff.

Their strength coach is good too.

They seem to loathe their WR coach.

I honestly think we have a very good DC on staff already in Jones. It was obvious that Ed O quit meddling when he got fired. Look at the stats and formations before and after the Bama game. We may not need a DC, maybe we just need a DC that has a competent head coach that cares. I like the aggressive defense of the past 4 games. It could only get better if there was a complement offense to complement it.

I think the biggest mistake that Kelly could make is to fire Jones immediately; I would use the bowl game to see how he interacts with players and let him run his defense.

If memory serves me right, when Saban came from MSU none of his coaches came with him. He’s done OK.

IMO, while more difficult, it is probably best if he brings as few and retains as few as possible. Coaches get comfortable with "their guys" and want them to follow them around. When guys like Kelly have to replace a decent group of coaches, it forces them to work extremely hard and do their best to hire the best. Bringing over his guys is lazy if he doesn't even interview anyone else.

Imagine one day coaching in the area where you grew up, making good money, and loving your job and the next day you have to decide on a whim to uproot your family to an unknown place or stay there with no certainty of who will be there. It's a really tough decision, I don't think he's striking out. He's asking men and their families to make incredibly tough life and career decisions on a whim.

I’d hire Venables, way way before I’d hire Freeman.

You also wanted to hire Matt Campbell IIRC. Just Kidding LOL!
I don't think Venables will ever be a head coach. Dude has some major non public baggage, that is why he has never been a head coach yet. OU knows the issues as they were present when he was there so maybe they roll the dice. Also don't slip on freeman he's gonna get a HC job pretty soon

A) They are college football coaches. Comes with the territory.

B) It's not like they are "thinking about it", they are flat out saying no, or not right now.

Riley took a decent amount of his staff from the get go, were on the damn plane with him.

You guys are taking this completely the wrong way. I'm not saying this as a negative towards Kelly. I just expected at least some of his ND staff to be on board with him from the get go. But like someone already said, Notre Dame is different and a lot of those guys are in it for the school, not necessarily for the coach.

Kelly decided late to take this job.

This whole thing has been thrown together since that moment.

If I’m a coach on that staff, I’d be pissed at Kelly because only 1 team has to lose and you’re in. And once you’re in, anything can happen.

On top of that, ND was playing pretty good football down the stretch.

LSU can’t wait around because of signing day. These coaches will want to wait to see if they get to coach on the payoffs.

I think you make the last pitch today, if they don’t come, you move on.

If nothing else, this coaching search should have taught you that 99% of media reports are speculative.

incorrect. If Bama loses, Ok St is in with a win.

I feel like Kelly has been striking out early on his coordinator hires. Notre Dame's S&C coach and their RB coach have both been contacted and both indicated they are staying.

Kelly reached out to Tony Alford who is his former RB coach but has been at Ohio State the last several years.

Alford is great but it’s no shame if you can’t pry him from OSU.

Elston is the key guy here, the rest don’t matter much to me.

Strength coach is staying. It’s possible we may get their assistant SC, who gets great reviews from ND faithful.

Either way, indications are that CBK puts Moffitt out to pasture.

yeah I don't really see it as a bad thing if he has to hire mostly a new staff. I'd love Freeman and Elston, but I could see why Freeman is a very tough pull. Kelly has a pretty good track record of hiring DCs so I'm not sweating it

ND is a cult. Rees is a lifer, Freeman is going to get the HC job likely, and their S&C coach is like Moffit and I don't see him leaving.

I think saying he's "striking out" is a bit harsh.

I think this is one guy I’m pretty sure we do get unless he gets offered the DC gig.
