...the more loudly people will object to the idea of LSU hiring him.

You see it with Jimbo, you see it with Brian Kelly's name being thrown out there, you see it with James Franklin, Bob Stoops, etc. I've even seen people crapping on Dabo Swinney, who next to Saban has been the most successful coach in all of college football the last decade.

Even Mike Tomlin's name brought people bitching.

The thing is, the more a guy has coached at a prominent place where his team is on TV a lot, the more you're going to see his imperfections. And then the more you're going to think to yourself "I don't want that guy."

Why does this matter? Because the established big name coach is what Woodward hires. And that means one of these guys people groan about is likely to get the job, and you'll be all kinds of pissed off about it.

When, as I keep saying, the history of LSU's football hires is generally a collection of mediocrities and clowns with a very small number of exceptions. We've never hired an established A-list head coach for football, and by all indications we're about to.

Seems equally opportunistic to me. No matter the candidate, there are plenty of naysayers

Franklin isn't established. The only thing he's established is he has a goose egg (0) against ranked opponents on the road. And that's not because he doesn't have the players or resources at Penn St.

Stoops hasn't coached for 5 yrs (not counting XFL)

Jimbo has the resources and recruiting at FSU and A/M he's still putting up Miles numbers.

Kelly is a great coach - he could use our recruiting the most to see what he can do.

Kelly and Stoops are 62 we are wanting someone that can be here for 10 yrs.

There is not a single coach that would make the entire fanbase happy. If Woodward brought Saban back, there would be people bitching about his age.

Im not trying to start a argument. But your Jimbo evaluation is like a bunch I see in here that don’t make sense .
Isn’t every other HC putting up Miles numbers besides Saban . Just saying …..

I believe Saban has alot to do with it. He has had a run that we have never seen before so that becomes the standard.

If a coach has not reached that standard at an established school many people will throw them out of consideration bc they think said coach cannot build a dynasty. i.e. Jimbo.

It would seem many on here would rather take a risk on a Napier/Aranda/Fickell candidate with hopes they are the next chosen one.

Just my observations. I've seen the term "the next saban" many times on this board the past couple of weeks and sure I would love the next saban. But no one knows who that will be, or if there will even be another one.

One in the hand, two in the bush i suppose. I guess it just depends on your willingness of risk

Well yeah. You know what you're getting with an established coach, and if they're willing to leave their current spot it's not better than the Miles years. A lot of them are also by happenstance "CEOs", and I think I speak for the entire fanbase when I say we've had CEOs for 1.5 decades now and we'd rather not do that again. With Tomlin in particular, he would crash and burn so hard in college it's not even funny. That man can barely stand handling NFL players. 18 year old divas would end him. That's not a knock on his coaching ability. Just that he would not recruit well and probably at some point tell a 5 star to leave and never come back.

Granted, there is obvious wisdom in picking the established guy that will go to the NY6 a lot and compete for a natty when stars align, but it's more fun to think about hiring the next big thing.

Most of the complainers on here are fanbois of a specific coach, like Tucker, Napier, Kiffin, Aranda, Franklin. Their goal is to tear down any coach that isn't their guy.

The others are people trying to inject reality into the conversation. Day, Kirby, Riley, Saban, Fickell, Tucker, Tomlin, Urban, Cristobal, and B. Kelly are not coming this year. Especially a coach on a championship run. They will not leave what they have personally built to go to someone else's disaster.

The most believable posters on here are the ones that say I like Coach A, but will fully support Riley, Fisher, Nick, Kirby or Dabo. Anyone bad mouthing a proven winner, is to be ignored.

Most fans just want the following:

* A HC that is really good on one side of ball.
* Handles himself well with Media & not a "character"
* Players respect & play hard for him
* Good staff
* Recruit, Recruit, Recruit

LSU will be successful with someone that meets these criteria.

it's a combo of principles: familiarity breeds contempt and the other side of that coin, the best player on a team is the sub QB who never played

I don't support it, but I can definitely see a Stoops hire. The program is in a period of turmoil, and Stoops could bring stability. Bring in a group of Coordinators and Asst's to establish a footing for the future, and Stoops could step aside in 5-6 years.

i agree and honestly its the opposite for some. some throw out all pretense and do not want a candidate no matter what. Even if the numbers dont work for them

i will say i 100% dont want franklin because i think he is mediocre without moorehead and his offenses have been pretty terrible without him.

I dont really want kiffin but i would take him. atleast he is exciting and about every other year we would be really good. I do worry though...he has never put togther back to back good/great seasons.

agree 100%. i think urban would come but i dont think we offer. Tucekr and Cristobal will be in the middle of historic runs and have no reason to leave. they others are freaking pipe dreams in the finest.

agree. I personally like napier and aranda but i will 100% support risher. i personally think riley and dabo talk are 100% pipe dreams. Hell i think jimbo is a pipe dream.

imo it comes down to

napier
aranda
kiffin
tucker
campbell

tucker might be in a big run and MSU has the funds to match whatever we throw out, kiffin i dont think the admin wants him for various reasons including the lack of stacking good seasons up.

that leaves napier, aranda, campbell. i could easily see the last two not wanting the spot light that is LSU HC and that leaving napier.

I actually wouldn't say that Kelly is a dead letter.

We don't know what he makes. His salary is publicly reported at like $1.8 million, but Notre Dame is also paying an LLC that he owns an undisclosed amount. I've seen estimates of him pulling down $4-5 million, which would make him big-time attainable for LSU at what Woody is paying Orgeron.

Is he a little on the old side? Yeah, but you can get a good 6-8 years out of him.

The fact that they essentially did a coach-in-waiting deal for Freeman at Notre Dame is an indication that Kelly is about to test the waters. Either that or he's going to retire soon. He doesn't strike me as a guy who retires from coaching early. That guy lives and breathes football.

And all I can say about Kelly is the last two coaches we've had in here have won national championships and Kelly absolutely took the pants off both of them when we had to play him in bowl games. He's a huge step up from Les Miles or Ed Orgeron. I'm not saying he's my first choice but I'm absolutely not going to bitch if that's who Woody brings in here.

Everyone has an opinion and 99% of them are wrong. Even Ragu, who bragged that he knew everything the insiders knew, watched the news with me in 2004 talking about Saban possibly leaving LSU for the NFL. After the segment was over, I said “what do you think?”. He just shook his neckless head and said “he ain’t leaving, 100%”.

Two days later he was gone.

That’s when I learned that most people, even if they’re connected, are full of shite.

But does that mean LSU will have success?

The last HC LSU fans were generally excited about AT THE TIME HE WAS HIRED was Curly Hallman. We all know how that turned out.

Dinardo - made Vandy competitive. but never had a winning season there.
Saban - was barely above average at MSU until his final season. Most LSU fans knew him as the HC of the MSU team whose arse LSU kicked in the Independence Bowl.
Miles - Somewhat of an out of left field name whose only big claim to fame was upsetting a top ranked OU team twice
Orgeron - Coach with ZERO market demand and ZERO history of success as a HC.

One "brought back the magic". The other three won National Championships.

All four of those coaches were different. The one common thread is that they all recruited well. Obviously you have to be able to coach as well (see Orgeron) but first and foremost the new HC, regardless of his list-status MUST be able to recruit at a high level.

I agree. He said this summer that he plans on coaching as long as he's healthy. The NFL rumors last year didn't come out of nowhere either.

He has won everywhere he has been, so likely has a higher floor than most other candidates. If he wants a new challenge bad enough, he could go for another decade.
