What you quoted does not mean this:
It’s not an exclusive license. As someone pointed out, it’s mainly there to make clear that OU doesn’t owe him royalties during or after his time at OU for using his image and likeness.

EXACTLY.
LSU has ZERO leverage in any supposed negotiations with him. NONE! LSU needs a HC. Riley doesn't need LSU. If I were him I would flat out fricking laugh at Woodward if he gave me some sort of ultimatum with at least 5 weeks left in the season.
And he sure as hell would not accept a new job offer while his current school has an opportunity to make the playoffs. Moreover, with the current success of Kingsbury and Arizona, you can bet there will be a few NFL teams who are considering Riley.
Either the OP's source is horribly misinformed or exaggerating, or LSU really isn't serious in trying to get Riley.

If he’s asking for an answer by a certain date it’s not bc he has leverage it’s because we need to know if we need to move on to other targets. It’s really not that hard people.

Because if true, the guy conducting the search ranks Franklin and Napier higher than Kiffin or Aranda. Your 2nd sentence is an opinion, and though we all have them and our preferences I’ll trust Woody over you considering the quality of his past hires at 3 institutions.

It’s a terrible way of doing business. These aren’t out of work coaches. Lincoln has his team headed towards the playoff. Expecting him to take his focus off of that and negotiate a deal with LSU in the middle of the season is ridiculous.
Not only that, I wouldn’t trust any deal that’s struck during a season. There’s too many variables. What if OU runs the table and wins the championship somehow? He’s not going to want to leave after that. Then you’re stuck with either a broken verbal contract or a written contract that Riley is trying to get out of, which brings bad media attention.
Which is why I didn’t care for being concerned with “getting a head start” on the coaching search. Aside from a long time with a lame duck coach, you can only really gauge interest of candidates and then sit in a holding pattern until the season is over.
