I agree. There are only so many SEC jobs and they pay life changing money. The only reason I would say no is if I couldn't get the cash needed for my staff.

The most Mississippi schools can offer a coach is 4 years. And I can promise you that State did not offer $5M/year.

OP is fake news.

State didn't offer Billy Napier 4/20mm. Not a chance. Dumb, misinformed thread

Feels like the “waiting on the perfect opportunity” thing never works out for these smaller school guys. Eventually the shine wears off of you the more years you put in at HC. One bad season and that shite goes out the window

No one is going to have success at MSU! Smart career move for Napier! It would lower his coaching stock in the long run because you can’t recruit to MSU and have success and win. The right job will come along within a year or two for him and he will jump on it

Mullen did just fine

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to get 8 wins. It just takes a good coach. There are a lot of them out there.

That's what Hudspeth said too. See what happened to him.

It took Mullen 9 seasons to get out of Starkville.

TIFWIW, but there are sauces here in Mississippi claiming to have close ties saying that Napier will indeed accept the State position. They claim it will be announced Monday. Like I said, TIFWIW, which may not be much!

You're not a candidate if you've already been hired

When Dooley left Tech for Tennessee we knew he couldn't cut it. I think he knew he couldn't cut it. But we all knew he would make more in a year there than a decade in Ruston. Not sure I could say no to that amount of money for my family even if I knew it would be a three year disaster.

He did not want to work so hard and knew he would never get fired there.

This.

Sorry, but coaching at State, Arkansas, and OM are very tough gigs given the SECW and SEC in general.

You can win 8 at State, but a good coach should be able to win 8 anywhere. But there aren't that many jobs that pay $3 mill +
Missouri was the job, and Drinkwitz grabbed that after only 1 year as a FBS head coach.
S Carolina has a similar level of difficulty as the SEC West jobs: Ga, Fla and Clemson every year. You get a little breathing room with Vandy, but so does Ole Miss and that's one game.
