Wasn’t he a semi-hot commodity about 4-5 years ago?

Wonder if Odom would be interested. COuld find the $$ he wanted at Tulsa, but UNT has deeper pockets.

Dont be shocked to see a bit better than expected rumored list of coaches interested in the job.

Yes. He had Graham Harrell as his OC during that period though, I believe.

North Texas targets...

"North Texas targets for next coach are Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Sonny Dykes, Lincoln Riley, Jim Harbaugh & Ryan Day, sources told
@ActionNetworkHQ"

In all seriousness I would hire Skip Holtz. With the resources at UNT he would be successful.

Always love it when a program with a record like North Texas fires a head coach that is .500

0-5 in bowl games, 0-2 in title games, and 44-44 overall...

In a G5 world where you get 1 freebee at least in the nonconferene and then parity in conference going .500 with the largest salary budget in your conference is unacceptable.

UNT has and spends money lately. They dont have the budget issues of say Tulsa of LA Tech. They are one of the largest of the CUSA budgets and will be in the top 1/3 or so of the new AAC next year. Not winning (and being consistently blown out in big games) the conference or a bowl after 7 years is going to get you canned.

They are moving up to the AAC, so that should make it a more desirable job for someone looking for a step up the ladder toward the P5.

This has always been an odd job. UNT is a large commuter school 30 miles north of DFW yet they want to be the team of DFW.

TCU and SMU will always come first. Then you have Baylor and Tech and everyone else that recruits DFW hard

They’ve historically have been one of the worst programs in D1

People always say it’s a big job but is it?

I don’t think they will ever be a central Florida or Boise type

He was second highest paid head coach in CUSA. 44-44 ain’t gonna cut it when you have so many advantages over your competition.

I found out the other day that UNT is 13th all time in number of total conference titles in football with 25. I don’t care what level or conference that is, 25 conference titles is WAY more than I ever expected.

The problem with UNT is that they have been imprinted in a large swath of fans of being just bad during Riley Dodge/Bottom 10 years when they have actually been much better overall longterm in there conference than comparative teams.

Combine consistently getting blow out in big conference games and for a long stretch playing multiple body bag payout games annually on TV to fund the AD, and it gets stuck in peoples head that UNT has always been just bad.

I still don’t understand who UNT really is from a brand/location perspective and they get somewhat hammered by being what would fit as a great small town college brand but are surrounded by 200k people and have like 35+k students.

They aren’t DFWs team, but really neither is TCU or SMU. Texas, OU, or even TT are probably much closer to claiming that title than the other 3 ever will be.

They are a “commuter” school with more beds on campus than everyone in the state but Texas, A&M and TT. It just seems like that culture on campus is apathetic to athletics more than anything else.

I’m a UNT grad and go to a couple games each year. This makes no sense to me. Great coach and I think has a high ceiling, but they fired him. New AD will get to pick their own head coach. I’m puzzled.

0-5 in bowl games, 0-2 in tithe games, 44-44 overall. One of the highest budgets and salaries in their league and now moving to a new conference.

In truth, he probably should have been fired the previous year to avoid a coaching change going into a new conference, but there was no way to sell the excitement of the conference change next fall if they kept him after this season…

Didn't the AD that hired him just get a new job somewhere and the rumor was he was following?

AD is on his way to West Virginia. I don’t see Littrell going there, but I guess it’s possible.

UNT has an administration that really wants to be good and relevant in football. And spend money.

But a fanbase and alumni that don't care so much.
