Yeah and they were all championship winning coaches, Saban was a .585 winning percentage coach.

it will burst like in any business when fans stop buying merchandise and stop going to the games and stop watching on the TV's. I have stopped watching the NFL along with others. I am watching a lot more college sports. including womens volleyball on Sundays

The craziest part to me is that their are hundreds of coaches, if not thousands, in this country who can achieve the average results that any program usually gets. A school like Arkansas could probably find a few guys would would coach our team for $500k or less who could average 7 wins a year, yet we pay these exhorbitant salaries in the hopes that we find the guy who can get us that extra two or three wins every few years. It's sorta insane.

What's the market rate for the fourth-string quarterback? How about the backup long snapper? What about the second-string kicker at Georgia Southern?

Really? Do you really think it's that difficult? Virtually all organizations, even not-for-profits and governmental organizations, across all market segments, seem to be able to figure out the market-clearing wages for labor. I don't see why colleges can't do it for athletes. They already do it for coaches, and for administrators, and for professors, and for support staff, and for everyone else.

They get a scholarship and that can be significant tuition savings, especially if you're out of state and can't afford college otherwise. That's significant compensation.

Do the math and calculate an hourly rate, given the dollar value of those benefits and the amount of hours they put in. It's hardly "significant compensation".

No one is forcing them to go to college.

But if they want to play football, the NFL bars them from working for a few years.

I find it comical how in the US, which prides itself on being a capitalist, free market economy, we have millions of people who will actually support attempts by large organizations to restrict competition in the marketplace.

And within four seasons that investment was justified when he joined that group. Correct?

As more teams make playoffs coaches will get increases to match based on contract language. At some point you'll have several coaches over $10M each. that's when it becomes harder for small school to compete. But the more coaches make the high ticket prices will get. In the past decade they have doubled in price. In a few more years you'll see $200 face value tickets. The fan experience will die and an implosion will occur.

It's a market economy. As long as teams like A&M are willing to pay, salaries will increase. But whether it pays off for them, remains to be seen. All you really need is a smart coach with and engaging personality; Sumlin had neither.

My guess is that it happens when a few big time teams are forced to raise ticket prices to the point that fan attendance starts to decline. This might already be occurring because there are quite a few programs that can no longer fill up their stadiums.

Because if you drop an 18 year old straight out of high school on a NFL field, he's literally risking his life.

So should we ban an "18 year old straight out of high school" from joining the military? After all, he's literally risking his life.

What's crazy is the pretense that big D1 football players are "student-athletes"

Right. Jimbo gets $80 mil and there's billions of dollars in TV yet there's not enough money to pay the players. It's a bit ridiculous. There was a southpark episode that touched on this, and it seems like it rings truer every year.

Jimbo isn’t the highest paid, and his salary rank will drop precipitously each year of his contract if past trends hold.

only when saban retires or is finally let go but until he is gone things wont change

what will help right away is not if but when jimbo falls flat and has nothing but repeated regular 8-4 seasons it will open some eyes that NO ONE not even saban is worth that money

Coaching salary bubble pops shortly after the tv money bubble pops.
It will probably take some huge scandal.

Goodell will take over NCAA football as a farm league for the NFL after 2022. He will make coaches NFL owned and set cap limits for staffs but also paying players. Wins will determine salary increases only. You win you get the money. You lose you get nothing.
