I hate to sound like F-King, and more power to A&M for getting who they wanted, but as these numbers and contracts continue to blow up, at what point does the market dictate a correction? It just seems like this trend is not sustainable, and I’m really beginning to think that things have already gotten out of control.

College FB is the new NFL, which people have quit watching for whatever reason.

What's crazy is the pretense that big D1 football players are "student-athletes"

This has all been driven by the Midget in ALABAMA. Arms race to bear him. It is a bubble that will pop one day.

15 years ago Stoops was highest paid in the country at $2m/year. Pretty crazy.

When people stop caring about giving their college football team the best chance to win it will stop. Don't hold your breath.

the funny thing is you could argue that LSU started this whole thing when we gave Saban that contract back in 2000

The bubble will burst whenever players start getting paid. Right now, the coaches and administrators are benefiting off the relatively free labor. I realize that players get tuition, room, board, and a small stipend, but that's chump change compared to what they're bringing into the athletic departments. I view the coaches as little more executives pocketing millions of dollars while continuing to pay workers those minimum wage salaries.

Think about the number of hours players put into football (practices, film sessions, workouts, traveling, etc.). Now divide that into the value of the tuition, room, board and stipend. They are essentially paid chump change, and all of that differential is flowing to the top. Pay players and the coaching salaries may get under control.

That's BS. That initial contract was just a blip in the bigger trend. It didn't establish any new pattern. Plus, Saban didn't even become the highest paid coach in the country until after he won the BCSCG.

LSU started this in 1999 when it gave Saban 1.12 million. That was unheard of at the time.

That's baloney. Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier and Phillip Fulmer were all already making over $1m a year.

those guys had been at their schools for a long time earning incremental raises.

Going out and grabbing an up and coming coach and throwing major money at them was not that common.

LSU made waves when they did it.

It was 1.2MM per year. 5 years, 6MM.

It is an out of control arms race, and the lack of commitment and extortion from guys like Jimbo will have blow back one day. He has more pressure to produce in College Station in 2 years than any CF coach. I think he will fail.

"Made waves"? Yes. "Started this"? No.

This is the answer.

ESPN is laying off staff and cutting costs. Advertising revenue is dropping. The current arrangement isn't profitable.

Not sure how it's going to play out when it happens, but it's not going to end well for the sport.

What's the market rate for the fourth-string quarterback? How about the backup long snapper? What about the second-string kicker at Georgia Southern?

They get a scholarship and that can be significant tuition savings, especially if you're out of state and can't afford college otherwise. That's significant compensation. No one is forcing them to go to college. College football gives them a forum to showcase their talents in the hopes they can go to the NFL. It's hard to find that kind of exposure in other walks of life.

Furthermore, most athletic departments lose money.
