I would want to see him lose Briles and Odom and replace them before paying him that. He got his job because of the success O had and I would want to make sure he doesn’t fail like O did after losing coordinators before committing long term.

At what point do athletic directors across the country band together and blackball Jimmy Sexton? I wish baseball GMs would do this with Scott Boras.

They are being asked to pay more based on the assumption of continuing improvement.

You can consider it ridiculous because he hasn't won much yet or frame it as completely normal based on the going rate (which means Leach, Heupel, and Beamer will also be expecting somewhere around that much too).

The biggest problem I have with the contracts is the penalties for failure are almost nonexistent- and after a big contract you see the lower character Nutt and Orgeron types just mail it in and still collect the full amount

The exact same thing happened with Orgeron. As soon as they have success, they're going to demand market rate

The guy won a national championship. LSU had to pay the man.

If they’re smart (and that’s highly questionable), they’d pay him bc honestly they’re gonna get anyone any better. They’re not gonna go pluck an elite coach from a blue blood program or anything so hold on to what you got

These salaries are insane when you compare them to the nfl salaries.
college coaches wear a lot more hats than NFL. College HCs are coaches, GMs, scouts, marketing all wrapped into one job.

And with recruiting, there is less down time in the off-season.

Why? Give him a one time bonus, but no one was taking Orgeron. What was he going to do, get mad and walk?

Is Woodward single-handedly responsible for breaking the CFB coaching salary ceiling?

He started it with Jimbo and then Alleva screwed everything else up with the Aranda deal

Sexton maybe over the last 15 years

Although Michigan State and USC are debatably more responsible than LSU this year (since Riley is reportedly getting more than Kelly and Tucker is getting an amazing 95 million after his first winning season as a head coach)

You call his bluff.

Pittman has been good for Arkansas. But he’s not a threat of getting a bigger job than that right now. Same with Orgeron after the NC. He wasn’t getting a better job than the LSU job and he knew it. He would have stayed even if LSU didn’t give him a 1 cent raise. However, LSU foolishly gave him a big increase and extension…one they had to pay for significantly two years later.

You want to stop inflation in CFB coaching salaries? Start first by not overpaying the Sam Pittmans of the world. Tell him to come back to you when he finds some other school that will give him $50 M/7. I PROMISE you there isn’t someone else out there that will

He wants the money now because he knows he’s peaked and it’s all down hill from here.

I’d take the Pitt Boss all day every day over Napier. Not to say Napier isn’t a good coach but he’s nowhere near Pittman.

No, you do it so you can hire the next coach. Nothing to do with Orgeron. But it’s already hard enough to poach good coaches, if your school/AD gets a rep of not taking care of the ones you already have after historic, championship seasons?

What happened to the days of letting a contract run its course then negotiating in the final year like the old days.

Y’all are so small-mindedly stupid with this kind of thinking. Yes, Pittman may not go anywhere. But they’ll have to overpay their next guy so much up front because nobody will want to work there. Make no mistake, the coaches have the leverage in this market.
