Recently, there have been some bad coaching searches in football:

Cowboys
Tennessee
Mississippi State
Arkansas

Have any of these even come close to toppling Tennessee's #1 ranking for worst coaching search?

The cowboys seemed to have internal fighting going on with Garrett, but it still seems far from the open rebellion Tennessee had.

And the fricked up thing is that Tennessee lucked up into a good coach.

No. TN is still king. I think it worked out for them though.

Tennessee’s coaching search reminded me of that movie Solo where they fired the director halfway through production, got acting lessons for the lead guy playing Solo, and hired Ron Howard to take over, who then reshot over half the movie.

Nothing will ever top Tennessee. The LSU search for O turned out great now but man that was a shite show at the time between the Jimbo/Herman stuff and Joe “I am the search” Alleva. Rant was going nuclear.

Mike McCarthy is a good hire. The man won a Super Bowl for goodness sake. I just don't get that narrative.

What is it with people saying cowboys made a bad coaching hire? It was a good hire. Does it fit 1000%? Maybe not entirely. He basically has the same record as Sean Peyton with the same amount of playoff wins, 1 Super Bowl and coaches a half of fame QB for a decade. If the cowboys hired Sean Peyton people would be praising it as a tremendous hire. Seriously people are acting like the cowboys just hired Sam Pittman. He can also develop QB’s.

Does USC pretending they were getting rid of Clay Helton count?

I'm not saying the Cowboys made a bad hire. The hiring process is what was bad/awkward with the Garrett saga.

Does the "process" really matter if the end result is good? I doubt they gave a shite what everyone thought about their process if they got the guy they wanted lol

You can't ignore Ole Miss setting the standard for fricked up coaching searches.

We fired Cutcliffe when he was considered one of the best coaches in college football (still is).

We then offered the job to Rick Neuheisel. Rick had been fired from Washington for (literally) participating in his neighborhood March Madness pool. He then sued the NCAA and UWA for breach of contract, and won a $4.5 million settlement. He was out of coaching for 2 years while this was going on, serving as a volunteer at a local high school.

He was in his car in the airport parking lot when Pete Boone called him and cancelled the deal. Because he "couldn't get comfortable with the lawsuit".

What followed was a two week shitshow by which about 5 different coaches turned us down. We ended up with the O Zone, and won three conference games over the next three years.

If that's not the worst, it's pretty damn close.

Even though he ended up getting a MNC out of it because of Cam, the AU search that ended up with 5-19 Chizik and the guy booing him on the tarmac was pretty legendary.

The UCLA basketball coaching search last year was a mess. They tried to hire Cal by offering less money that what UK was willing to pay. They quickly figured out they aren't considered a "blue blood" any longer by most of the big time HC's. They thought they were going to hire Jamie Dixon, but were shocked TCU actually wanted them to pay the full buyout. Rick Barnes leveraged them for a big raise. They finally hired their 47th choice in Cronnin from Cincinnati...who wanted the job so badly he was basically willing to let UCLA try to get a date with every other girl at the school before they reluctantly agreed to go to the dance with him.

Or Sean Payton.

Then again , people on this site spell Belichick “belodnfbbyksdjrnrjwick” so this isn’t so bad.

Neuheisel had his agent send him videos of the Hotty Toddy chant. And he was running around the house with his wife and kids practicing it. We wouldn't even send a private jet for him. Because it was so far to Washington. But he was fired up and about to catch a commercial flight when Boone told him to stand down. Rick Neuheisel.
