In this model, your pool of coaches is very small. All current coaches have guaranteed deals so a coach would leave a guaranteed situation to coach a school that has averaged 9 wins under Saban, Miles, and Kelly, and fewer under O with those last two years. Averaging 9 wins gets you 5.5m a year and fired after three years.

And there ought to be deductions when you do stupid shite:
1) -$50,000 for every muffed punt and/or arm tackling
2) -$250,000 every time you call the fan base spoiled.
3) -$350,000 every time you slam your water bottle on the table.
4) -$500,000 for every game you make no adjustments in and/ or run out of the shotgun on the 1’ line, or run it up the gut on 3rd and 26
5) -$750,000 deduction if we lose to Alabama and a bonus $1,000,000 for beating Alabama.
5) lose to ANY rent-a-win, you forfeit your salary until the playoffs.

If a coach goes 9-3 for 3 years and is fired, he walks away being paid 36 million or 12mil/yr.

10 mil signing bonus
5.5 yr 1
5.5 yr 2
5.5 yr 3
10 mil buyout

Re-set market because one of the biggest coaching destinations can quit getting fricked by coaches and their slimeball agents. Wishful thinking, but one can dream.

This would be possible if there weren’t schools with money like A&M or Texas who quite frankly wouldn’t blink at a $54M buyout from a guaranteed contract every 2 years.

All the regular schools will do incentives, then Texas and A&M can just pay a $10M buyout then guaranteed contract for the first coach on an incentive deal that wins a championship.

Coach says hell yeah, thanks Texas I’ll take $100M guaranteed over this incentive shite.

Elko has a very incentive-laden contract with a lower base pay currently. The Jimbo buyout left a bad taste

Who’s the football equivalent of Matt McMahon?

That’s the only type of coach who’d agree to this contract?

LSU fans have no memory.

This was LITERALLY the selling point of O in da binda.

He got market rate after 2019.

Any good coach coming in would never agree to this, b/c 2-3 other schools will offer him market rate

Any unproven (or bad, in O's case) coach may take that deal, but as soon as they win, it will be a huge deal.

What's the point, exactly?

At best, that model works for an up/comer - not a seasoned coach in a small pool.

Most schools would even pay more than 20 mil if they win a championship.

Zero chance a coach worth a damn would agree to this. Pipe dream

This is definitely false. The talent pool of coaching is never as shallow as it seems in any moment. There are tons of great coaches out there, ADs just have to be able to vet them out and most just go for the biggest splash instead of the most solid

ETA: I love incentive structured contracts. It the way they should be.

I think NIL should work the same way, just in a smaller capacity. A player gets his full NIL after evaluating the season, including any bowl games.

Peter Burns apparently never took economics.

SOMEBODY would take that deal.

The absolutely best qualified candidates would reject it and end the negotiation without even making a counteroffer.

Sounds great. Unless we collude with the other open jobs it’s dead in the water

Absolutely love this. I would pay more for a title too. Probably a $10M bonus for a title.
