As others have said we have been grooming Mayo to take over once Bill left. There was actually a succession clause in his last extension for him to stay. I’m fine with this move as I’m more concerned with who our next GM is going to be. That was where BB hurt us the most recently.

I realize Mayo is also a former player and was already on the staff. But how TF do they pass on Vabrel, a guy who has already proven he is a very competent HC?

Vrabel was fired so that speaks for itself. They know what they’ve got in Mayo. Apparently he has a lot of qualities that they like.

Imagine if Mayo was white and the outrage without interviewing other candidates.
It's no different than Saints having to interview when they had already decided on Allen.

Little known fact: Mayo was recruited to Tenn by Coach O.

Does this hire count towards CEO's coaching tree?

Well, and Allen was DC, not a positions coach

That was with quickness- probably already had it lined up
I read in an article that he was given an extension in the past and it was ownership’s decision. I think billicheck (sp) was pushed out in favor of diversity. The article mentioned Kraft was spending 100 million on diversity projects

Kraft would hire Mayo.

They should hold the Mayo for a while.

I like how much of the NFL hires young and up-and-coming coaches. Seems like CFB has the opposite trend especially the big CFB brands.

IM sure we will hear a ton of jokes moving forward on Kraft mayo.

Heard he was on a short list of a lot of teams. NE players really liked him.

Intriguing hire, he's spent his entire playing and coaching career in New England.

They could have gotten a good coach like Vrabel, and they settle on Mayo? Horrifically terrible terrible decision by that franchise and their struggles will absolutely continue.

did the NFL follow through with that rule where if a team hires a black coach they get an extra first round pick?
