Opinions Here On Butch Davis ?

The guy was always solid at building great programs. He was known to build rock solid defenses, while also putting together very balanced pro style offenses. He recruited well, and was consistently great, everywhere he went.
I know, I know... The NCAA allegations at UNC. But, none of them were ever linked to him. UNC admitted that, but insisted that they fired him due to outside perceptions of their program. I remember them having to suspend like 8 of their defensive starters right before their game against us, and he still almost pulled off the come from behind victory on us. If memory serves me properly, it was a dropped ball in the endzone that allowed us to prevail.
I'm sure some of you may know more about him. Just curious as to opinions here.

Years ago he was considered a home run hire for LSU or any program...

He's shown that he can win with the right kind of talent, but players like Ken Dorsey and Willis McGahee don't exactly grow on trees.
Butch Davis would be a solid stop-gap type hire if LSU whiffs on Herman/Fisher.

Yeah, I get that he might not be as spry as he once was, but maybe worth an interview to see what kind of fire he still has. He would get extremely fired up when it came to team discipline when he was at Miami. I didnt get many chances to watch him at UNC.
As far as his stint at UNC being less than stellar: Well, before those 8 defensive guys were suspended (many of those guys were pro prospects, too), he had them ranked pretty highly. They were definitely getting better every year, and were getting there quickly!

I agree with you, but Louisiana also produces Jeremy Hills, Leonard Fournettes, etc. etc. etc. Butch was always able to recruit well on "just a tank of gas" in the S. Florida region, and he could do equally well at LSU.
I'm not anointing him as the hottest commodity, but his name deserves a thought. Gosh, I'd prefer him to a few of the names that keep popping up on this forum, lately.

I would think a P5 big time school would like be looking at a 64 year old has been to resurrect them. He has NCAA baggage regardless of how the NCAA ruled. Wasnt there an issue at he left UM

NCAA issues aside, he is just too old to be HC at a program like LSU.

He's great at rebuilding programs and stocking the cabinet for the next head coach. He's a stepping stone coach and trouble always follows him. A great hire for a program that is desperate.
Other than that he is way too old. We're looking for someone that will put in years here (a decade+)

Some Miami fans wanted to hire him last year.
But I don't believe any other program would have the slightest interest. Both the age and NCAA issues.

I appreciate everyone's opinions here. All I was doing here was attempting to stir discussion. I'm getting down votes galore,lol, but my intent was to promote discussion and opinions. I'm certainly not the Butch Davis apologist who thinks he should get the job here. Clearly, Herman and Jimbo are our best current options.
BUT, I'm seeing people talk about Spurrier, and other bums, and I know that Davis would be a better discussion than some that keep popping up on this forum.
I didn't realize he was 64. But hey, if all of the other highly touted prospects don't work out, I wouldn't mind a guy that could give a solid 3-5 years while grooming someone like Aranda to become the next head coach. None of us doubt that Aranda has the cerebral acumen and the ability to motivate his players, enough to make a fine head coach (if that's his desire). I'd hate to lose a guy like him due to hiring a young coach, IF the young coach is a stretch out of desperation.

Good info, thanks! I guess, though, one could credit him with those two years at Miami after he left, where Coker was on top of the world. One natty, and very close to a second, and those were Butch's teams.
