I’m not against Napier, but the risk of taking a G5 coach is highlighted by Neal Brown going from breaking records at Troy to a pretty bad 2.5-year start at West Virginia.

He might turn it around, but so far their records with him have been worse than the prior few years.

He remind me of Neal Brown, Eli Drink, Satterfield, Fuente, Wells, frost and Doeren.

What do they all have in common?

They only had a short resume as a first time HC ata G5 school then jumped to P5 and have sucked arse

Hope not, but I certainly see the parallels

If you go G5, you better do your homework and make damn sure you know everything about that coach’s plan and process, because history has shown that the odds of successful transition aren’t on your side

(Same thing is true for Fickell btw)

I like Napier but he’s a bigger risk than many here want to admit

You are really pushing this anti-G5 coach rhetoric lately. I'm not saying I disagree, but your logic is missing several data points.

What was the status of the program before?

Where did the previous coach come from and was he successful?

What other experience did the coach have? NFL? P5? OC? DC? All coaches are not the same, lumped together by one data point.

P5 coordinators have a high level of success. Barry Odom was promoted at Missouri from the DC and he failed. So, perhaps there is something else going on, rather than just Drinkwitz being from G5.

I also think something that plays into going G5 to P5…

If a coach is dead set on being loyal and bringing his entire staff or a lot of it, he’s inevitably going to fail. Because there’s no way a G5 staff has the overall and collective experience and expertise level to transition. If a coach understands that he’s absolutely got to USE the bigger resources and put together a better staff than the G5 resources allowed, then he’s got a better chance of success IMO.

Tom Herman kind of found that out the hard way and a little too late IIRC about his staff

You are correct. Almost every major HC was once at a G5, including the great Saban.

And all G5 programs are not the same. Would you judge Luke Fickell and Dave Clawson (Wake Forest) differently because one is at a P5 and one is at a G5?

Cincinnati is a much more established program than Wake is. It recruits better and likely has equal or better budgets, facilities, fan support, etc.

Not really responsive to your post but just want to note that Clawson has been at WF since 2014.

Neal Brown, Eli Drink, Satterfield, Fuente, Wells, frost and Doeren.

lets talk about these and the differences in them and napier

Neal Brown- was very hot name at Troy and jumped at the first chance at p5. happened to be west virgina a school that the previous coach had just gone 61-41 suddenly bolted from for a G5 job. Why did Dana bolt?? Its because long term WVU in the big 12 is impossible to win a ton at. You will consistently be a game or so over 500 in the long haul and WVU is not going to do the arms race thing. Its a hard place to recruit too and now in the big 12 is all but impossible to recruit to.

Neal shows a lack of judgement by jumping at this job, would have been like Napier going to South Carolina or MSU.

Eli Drink- had one year as OC then only one as HC of a G5 taking over a program already built by Satterfield. nothing in common with Napier and dumb choice to take Mizz right away.

Satterfield- did good at App State and his first year at Louisville, lets give him a chance at Louisville before saying he is a bust, honestly nobody has truely won at Louisville since Strong other than the Lamar Jackson years and even with strong they needed bridgewater. But take out the covid year and he has 12-8 record which isnt bad for Louisville

Wells- yea since TT is comparable to LSU, but he was winning this year and was 5-3. But this was a dumbass hire. At utah state his last year he went 10-2 but before that he had 3 straight losing records with no improvement year over year. Again nothing like Napier

Fuente- was the mastermind behind the memphis turnaround. did well at Vt but has struggled to rectruit there and pissed of Va HS coach. Prolly most comparable to Napier but at a program that is hard to win at historically. he is 41-30 so far at Vt, not much different than franklin is at Penn state when you remove the 2 years he had Moorehead.

Frost- took over a program that under oleary had consistenly been very good until his last year. He did not recruit that team and has consistently shown he has no idea what it takes to win at an elite level in P5 and honestly showed the same signs at ucf. Hell how good of a decision maker could he be to choice Nebraska over Florida, alum or no alum. and frost had been a P5 OC.

Doeren- was really good at n illinois but he took over a program that went 11-3 before he got there and jerry kill had built. Doeren did not build shite there, no comparision to Napier. then he goes to NC State and is 60-48 which is a 55% winning percentage which is historically better than NC State normally does. Also DD has a long history of being DC at multiple stops. Also he took over a program already winning about the same amount he currently is and has kept them steady and currently has them at 5-2 and has won 9 games twice which is pretty good at NCSTATE

none of the above were very smart about jobs they took except maybe satterfield and he still has a chance to be good. Frost was retarded to take Nebraska over UF. none of those coaches are at schools that have the resouces anyone would get at LSU.

also all except Frost are winning pretty much the same amount of games those programs have historically won. Only one comparable to Napier is really Fuente and he sucks at recruiting. always has, something Napier is great at.

there are some real flaws with how ULL plays. for one, they are AWFUL at tackling. Like in the 120s last I checked. Similar to ole miss being the most penalized team in the country this should be a big red flag.

I think most of the names would win at lsu. including Napier, but I think people are falling for trying to find the next Nick Saban when the fact is that there won't be anyone that good again. it is a huge risk to hand it over to Napier, not just because hes the coach at ULL.

There's absolutely no point in anyone arguing with you. You are either related to Napier or you're Napier's agent IF not Napier himself. Plenty of logical and well considered reasons Napier isn't all you claim and you simply swat them all away as if they've been completely made up or they don't exist. You have no reason to type so fervently, you're a Napier guy and believe in him as an utterly flawless and perfect candidate.

He doesn't have tons of experience.

His playcalling ability is worth questioning given his very short history as a P5 playcaller is mediocre.

He took over a program that did have winning seasons and bowl appearances.

You simply refuse to acknowledge that what's physically provable about Napier ranks him in the Aranda and Mel Tucker category.

The rest is just generic character assessments based on fluff articles and local adoration for him whether it's ULL alumni or media desiring access.

Napier should be squarely and firmly behind Aranda and maybe ahead of Mel Tucker.

Riley and Kiffin, no question, are more hailed head coaches and have shown it at multiple levels. Napier has barely even existed as a HC.

Again, you'll deny all this because you don't admit any flaws in Napier and twist every stat to suit what you already believe.

I’m anxious to see where Napier ends up. If lsu passes on him, I wonder where he goes from here. Might be some openings after we fill our spot. And usc. I imagine sexton is busy trying to fill the empty spots after all the moves are made

Winner in all this, sexton $$$

This is all more valid than "he coaches at a G5, therefore he can't make the jump to P5 successfully"

i mean not much to talk about. Im not real close the ull program or anything nor a real fan of them so I will say what i know

Hudspeth was a really good coach at D2 N Alabama, like very very good. not championship level good but routinely 1 or 2 loss good.

took over ull and won 9 games his first 4 years mainly on the back of being a rah rah guy. He realyl didnt have a vision for the program, most old school, im gonna coach my guys up kind of thing. But come to find out he was cheating like a mofo. they started getting investigated and suddenly it was back to losing. had 3 straight losing seasons and ran the program into the ground to the point that in Napiers first year they only had 53 commits on the team, only 2 4 stars(napier got these guys) and 18 3 stars. Really in Huds last year in 2017 they were down to 54 commits, no 4 stars and only 15 3 stars.

Napier has slowly built them to where in 2021 they have 70 commits, 3 four stars and 48 3 stars. went from 7th in conference in talent to 2nd with an average of 78.28(329pts) to 82.16 (513.86 pts).

napier has routinely built the talent up there

2018-(2) 4 stars, (18) 3 stars
2019- (3) 4 stars, (19) 3 stars (2019 #1 class in sbc)
2020- (2) 4 stars, (36) 3 stars (2020 #1 class in sbc)
2021- (3) 4 stars, (48) 3 stars(2021 #1 class in sbc)

he has completely rebuilt the roster.

He still isnt my number 1 and maybe not my number 2 but he is way above franklin, barely above kiffin and sure as frick has nothing in common with neal brown.

Hudspeth added three more 9–4 seasons under his belt, playing in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl defeating East Carolina in 2012, Tulane in 2013 and Nevada in 2014. However, the NCAA forced Hudspeth to vacate 22 wins from 2011 to 2014, including the 2011 and 2013 New Orleans Bowls and 2013 Sun Belt Conference co-championship, due to NCAA violations involving academic fraud and payments to players by an assistant coach. The Cajuns relieved Hudspeth of his head coaching duties after the conclusion of the 2017 season

Apparently he didn't learn his lesson either:

quote:

In 2019, Hudspeth was hired by Austin Peay State University after Will Healy left to take the head coaching job at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In his first season as head coach, Hudspeth led Austin Peay to its first 11-win season in program history, its first Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) title in 42 years, and first appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship playoffs, where the Governors defeated Furman and Sacramento State before falling in the Quarterfinals to Montana State.

On July 3, 2020, Hudspeth resigned, initially saying he was doing so to spend more time with his family A public records request, however, found that Hudspeth had been suspended by Austin Peay at the time of his resignation for his "recent unacceptable conduct" and for violating terms of his contract involving "egregious personal conduct" and "conduct that is clearly contrary to the character and responsibilities" of the position

He coaches HS football in AL now.
