Huff and Marshall admin actively hated each other. He just wanted to get out and they weren't going to stand in his way or extend him.

Saw an article that predicted the majority of the Marshall team will hit the portal.

If that's the case, the Marshall administration will be hating Huff retroactively and proactively.

I know Marshall wouldn't extend him, and I heard about some head butting between he and administration over NIL, but there has to be something else. I've heard the fanbase is happy he's gone, and this is after leading

He always has seemed like an a-hole so maybe that's true.

Just strange he couldn't get a better job.

Better hope the Maryland job doesn't open.

Why would that job open?

And Maryland is a pretty good job now.

Locksley isn't doing well. And, after Locksley, Huff is one of the best recruiters in the DMV.

There’s some truth to this considering in Huffs opening meeting with the team, he straight up told them they play some of the most undisciplined football he’s ever seen granted, he’s not wrong. Southern Miss has talent, but god our coaching has been awful.

If his family wasn’t happy in Huntington, WV and he just took a job to get out then I wouldn’t expect him to stay long at USM. Hattiesburg is great….for Mississippi.
If he’s a good coach, he will get opportunities to coach at places much more desirable.

I spent some time at USM and still have friends there.

They shared with me a rumor that Huffi met with team and told them if I haven’t called or spoken with you you need to hit the portal. They are saying he only wants to keep about 20 current players

That rumor is correct. Heard that from my friends with connections in the AD, they plan on bringing in 50+ new guys

I disagree. Hattiesburg is growing, and it’s a good city. Good school system in Lamar county, great food, close to NOLA and the beaches, and above all great people in that area.

I think Huff is the real deal and will land a B10 or SEC job after USM. If you watched Marshall's game vs Ohio State this season, you know Huff's kids can play! If his guys are coming from Marshall to USM, Huff is bringing his own LV.

I've heard that there are issues with the administration, the fans don't really want him, his wife doesn't like Huntington, Southern Miss is offering him more money. I don't know how many of these are true.

Judging from Marshall message boards and social media over the last couple of weeks, the part about his wife being unhappy in Huntington seems to be a common thread.

Who knows if that was his driving motivation to leave, but the issues with the administration apparently stemmed from Huff looking for other jobs since 2022. The AD basically confirmed that on a radio interview today, and said that Huff's agent was open about him taking interviews during the season. Made it sound like this had been inevitable since the summer.

Well Fritz took the Houston job because his wife was flying back and forth to Houston weekly so I can see that being a reason.

And again with Fritz he interviewed basically yearly with other universities but that was more so he could get more money for him or his staff. I understand that a coach constantly 'with a foot out of the door' is frustrating but it's the name of the game.

Now this is a odd move. Why?

Yeah USM probably has a better recruiting area. But there is more mid level competition down here for talent.

Huff openly criticized the fanbase/NIL at Marshall after their starting QB hit the portal last year. Neither were happy with the other. Ultimately it sounds like it wasn't a good fit, but Huff was able to put a consistent product together despite that which is a good sign for USM fans.

There's an argument to be made that USM made a better hire than their SEC counterparts in Starkville did last year.

Huff knows the area having recruited for Bama and also Huff is from the DMV. He can pull kids out of there too. I think Huff is a homerun hire for USM.

Good for him. Will Hall wasn't good, but I never saw him throw an interception or miss a tackle. If you're a USM football player and Huff doesn't want you, well... good fricking riddance. You'll always have fond memories of that victory over SLU, right?

My main concern is that USM fans are less tolerant of careless offhand remarks than most. If he couldn't get along with Marshall fans, how is he going to keep the peace with USM fans? Ellis Johnson made one careless remark after his first game (which, frankly, was 100% true) and USM fans never let him live it down.

Everything Ellis Johnson did as the USM head coach was "careless," if you want to use Sunday morning church talk.

This is by far the best hire USM could’ve made in terms of their options. Absolutely stoked for this as a USM alum, basically Huff wanted to leave Marshall due to admin and his family not loving Huntington. Hattiesburg is a great town, welcome to it Charles.

Just curious because I don't know anything about Huff, and I've only been keeping up with Southern Miss for a few years...why's this such a good hire?

(Had my fingers crossed for someone who could right the ship. Glad it sounds like they got the guy.)

he's a good coach and a great recruiter. brought a bunch of guys from their championship team including the QB.

he's got a reputation for being difficult to work with from an administration standpoint. marshall fans are big mad on twitter. obviously i have no clue if what they are saying is true or if its sour grapes but hopefully we don't run into that problem.

if he's successful at usm, i'd be surprised if he didn't get p5 offers.
