It says that if he had just quit he'd have gotten nothing.
Canada wanted to leave, Ed wanted him gone. Neither wanted go give up $3m. So they reached a settlement. It's not that complicated.

It may or may not be good for the future, but it this looks bad for O no matter what.

I'm no lawyer but that sounds like it would be a reason for fire a guy for cause, so no, that didn't happen.
Canada and O didn't like each other. They wanted to go their separate ways and this is the most beneficial way for both parties. It's not that complicated.
