I've wanted Rhule or Aranda this whole time. I was interested in Riley but was concerned about his lack of focus on DC and defense recruits. You must have a very good defense to win in the SEC. There are days your super offense will be shutdown and you have to have a defense to hang on in the end to get the W.

This has never been one Riley's M.O. Plus the games he has almost lost and did lose had me concerned.

I really hope it is Rhule or Aranda. The problem with these, is they will be coming in late for recruiting if they Rhule waits till end of season or Aranda waits till Bowl game. But I'm willing to lose a couple recruits for either of these guys in the long term. It will be a minor impact.

Rhule would be the best hire out of everyone, including Riley.

I want a playcaller on offense and someone who can recruit and develop QBs. You have to have that kind of consistency on the offensive side of the ball.

As much as I love Aranda, I don't see our QB recruiting and development improving at all under him.

Rhule has never been realistic IMO.

Why?

Do you think that he's just an idiot or something?

After Alabama struck out on Rich Rod and Greg Schiano, they sacked up and grabbed Nick Saban.

It wasn’t realistic until it happened.

Dave is smart enough to understand where he doesn't have expertise though. He can hire someone that understands how to do that. There are plenty of head coaches that came from the defensive side of the ball that still get great QBs and develop them because they understand that they need someone on their staff that knows how to do that. Look at Saban, he's not a QB expert by any means, but he continually keeps people on staff that are. You can't have it both ways, if you have a guy that is straight offense and QBs, then your defense is going to have to rely on someone that knows that side of the ball to succeed. You're not winning SEC championships and national titles with a garbage defense either and OU is living proof of that.

ETA: Even with Ed, who is a functional fricking moron, our QB play improved dramatically from the Miles era. So that should be a good indication there that it's possible to do this without a QB guru as a head coach.

Idiot? No.

Someone who can win recruiting battles for elite QBs over Jimbo, Day, Riley, Dabo, Saban, Kirby, and others? Absolutely not.

I would love to have Aranda, he would kill it here. I get it, he’s young in terms of his head coaching career. On the other hand, he went 10-2, beat a top 10 team, and is playing in a conference championship, all in year two.

I think this is a dumb take.
Look at the top SEC Teams.....UGA and Bama.

Defense oriented coaches. The defense wins games and sometimes has to hang on to the leads for you. No matter how good an offense is, they will struggle on some days and a lot of times against inferior opponents. Or a good defense shuts them down and you will need a good defense to hang on to a lead.

Baylor's offense and QB was not nearly as good as OU's and they won. Kansas almost beat OU as OU's offense struggled. OSU has a really good defense and they beat OU's highpowered offense.

I'm perfectly fine with a defensive mind running the show as long as they can get a good OC and develop QB's. But the opposite is true, an offensive mind must be able to get a good DC and good defensive recruits. Riley has not proven he does that.

Serious question.

I keep seeing people really wanting Rhule, but when I look at his past, I dont' get what he has accomplished that screams "must hire".

So what is it about him that people like?

I guess Rhule would qualify as a white whale. He’s one of my favorite coaches in the NFL but I see no reason why he’d come to LSU.

His record at Baylor, (although it was a short time) looks a lot like what Aranda has done. That and the fact the NFL wanted him certainly makes him look desirable. He also had back to back 10 win seasons, at Temple.

Look at his record at Baylor. He took a scandal ridden program that went 1-11 his first season, and year 3 he had them 11-1. He is a defensive guy and did an amazing job at Baylor's turn around. Aranda is doing the same thing. They were bad last year but have turned it around in year 2.

I will take either one over Riley. Riley was giving the keys to the Caddy with a smooth road to the Big 12 title each year. But because he hasn't focused on Defense, DC's, and defense recruits, he thinks he can outscore everyone.

But when he runs into a Bama, LSU, Baylor, Ok State, that have a defense, he can't get over the hump. Give me somebody that has built something and turned a program around.
