agree withy what you're saying to an extent, but Carrol and Meyer have never lost 5 games in a season (with a chance at 6).

true, meyer did lose four last year with a heisman trophy qb. Wander how he would have did w/o tim tebow?
s.e.c. and pac 10 are quite different.
saban lost 6 last year, and 5 in 2002. He is/was great, fan's think he's a great coach. he even lost three games in 2004. so, miles is a dumbass because of this year but these other coaches are great.
Not saying miles is the greatest coach ever, it just doesn't matter who he hires, how much he wins, or how well he recruits. It will never be enough.
We got guys upset about chavis because going 10-2 will not be good enough.
somewhere out there, there must be a d.c. good enough to insure we will not lose a game?
this stuff gets old. We are exactly two plays from being 9 and 3 even with the qb and defensive play we had. If we improve in both area's, why can't we turn 2 or 3 l's into w's?
I love we almost lost or may lose games comments. People say we were a few plays from losing 4 or 5 last year. Why weren't we two plays away from being undefeated last year?

would you say those rankings are considerably higher on average than Chavis' defensive unit rankings during that time period?

Of course not. You seem to look at everything as an absolute. Miles doesn't make poor DC choices, he's retarded. People aren't optimistic about Chavis, they're sycophants who answer everything with "FEARDAHAT DAMNSTRONG WOOT!"
Don't misinterpret this as an attack - society in general is starting to describe everthing as the Greatest Ever, or Absolutely Horrible with no degrees in between. But that doesn't make it any less intellectually lazy to look at things that way.
Your beef is that TN's defenses have been "mediocre" 3 of the last 4 years. Is it your position that the loss of a DT so talented he was taken in the 1st round despite playing 3 games his Sr. year had ZERO effect on TN's ability to stop the run? Or that having, say, 8 new starters in another year also did not affect TN's defensive ranking in any material way? That the ONLY explanation for these rankings is that Chavis sucks?
Or, is it more likely that these things added, say, 50-60 ypg total to TN's defensive stats? That's about an extra drive per game. But think about that for 2 seconds - defense on the field that much longer, playing from behind more, extra guy in the box to stop the run denies the ability for safeties to help over the top, etc. It doesn't take much at this level.
I get the feeling that, like Groucho Marx who wouldn't join a club that would admit him as a member, you'd hate any DC Miles hired simply because it was Miles who hired him. And that's fine. But that doesn't excuse your refusal to acknowledge the potential reasons underlying the stats you keep quoting as evidence against Chavis.

If the hires of:
Chavis
Vance Joseph
Orgeron or Haley
are indeed accurate then this is a great day for Tiger football. That list is a major overhaul and coup, in my opinion. If Miles is able to hire these guys then I again will shut up about Leslie for a while.

I've heard from good sources that coach O is a definite lock. His agent is just working the game trying to get the most he can for his client. But, he wants to come back to college and would love to be at LSU.
LSU needs to wait and see if Payton will fire Gary Gibbs and defensive staff. This might remove the leverage that Coach O has right now and really get this deal done for a realistic price instead of shedding out way more than he's worth.

It will not be Chavis.
Atleast that's what I'm hearing.

He still has UT as leverage.

I haven't liked Chavis in many years for a DC. If we get the Chavis, O, Joseph combo I have to say that I will be happy though. Sounds like a leap in the right direction to me. Chavis DID have some nasty defenses at one point that I would love to see LSU replicate.

do you think he is a good coach??? Or should i say, are you glad he is gone
I think he's a great DC. When he's got the talent, the Defense is great. I think the run from '95 (his first season) to '01 (Before the Talent drop off), our Defense was only rivaled by maybe FSU and UF. Also put a ton of LB's into the NFL.
I'm not happy he's gone... but I am pleased with Monte Kiffin.

i haven't been behind the hiring of chavis since i first heard his name suggested by fans back during the season
i will support and root for him, but i still don't like the hire
i don't like his struggles with the spread and quite frankly the inability of UT to adapt to the changing college football world is what killed the fulmer reign. how much of that is shouldered by chavis, i am not sure, but i am not all excited about this

He can still use Tenn if he wanted too. We just need to get a fair deal done.
