He checks many of the boxes:
- young(er) end of the coaching spectrum, relative speaking
- coached at a defensively stout college: Wisky
- coached against modern/spread offenses: all
- NFL experience
- some local connections for recruiting
- connected to LSU/Orgeron via Aranda

HOWEVER, he doesn't check the biggest box IMHO: RESULTS

Forget about can he call plays defensively... he hasn't been very successful in a limited role position coach.

My feeling on this is Jones is in the conversation because he does check those boxes and was likely recommended (at least for consideration) by Aranda. And likely it will end with consideration/interview. So no need to panic.

And if for some reason they do hire Jones, he can't fall short. I really can't see Orgeron (or Woodward) going that far out over their skis.

For me. If we are going this route. Just give it to Corey Raymond and hire a legit LB coach.

What makes you qualified to evaluate football coaching talent and how are you privy to who is being interviewed and who is not? I mean if you are that privy, then stop holding back and spill your guts.

Indeed, is this the best post you can do because if it is, then you ought to hang it up because this thread is nothing but a freaking waste of everyone's time.

This is just stupid. There are plenty of DC's out there that would making a huge step up to come to LSU. There are Co-DC's looking for their shot at doing it by themselves with the ability to do so. This isn't rocket science. Go hire a damn coach.

O - 2017

2017 O could back most of that up. 2021 O who meddled in Canada’s offense, threw shade and belittled Aranda in a NC year, and hired miserably with Pelini/Linehan has been exposed and forced to roll the dice with first time coordinators hoping for lightning again.

It’s on paper the worst hire yet of the O era. Which is an incredible statement. But true

As I recall the last number of years the coaches we the
fans thought were homerun hires,Trent Johnson.Nikki caldwell
Tom Herman, John Chavis( third and chavis) turned out to
be meh.So lets keep badmouthing whomever O hires and theres
a good chance we will be wrong.Thats why we are not in the
Football business. The more negative the better.

I thought y’all wanted a young(er) up-and-comer?

Except hes not an up and comer. He’s a journeyman defensive backs coach with mixed results at best. His last few stops have resulted in secondaries getting significantly worse right when he gets there

That's subjective. What exactly makes one an "up-and-comer" anyway? That seems like a catch-22 to me. One isn't really an up-and-comer until they've actually come up and succeeded. That's why I feel that term being thrown around so much here is simply dumb. Truth is, 99% of the people on these forums, including myself, don't really know what to look for in a potential DC anyway. We're just throwing names out and hoping one sticks. We can look at stats all day, but they rarely show the full story. We don't know much about the situation he was in, what type of defense he likes, his knowledge of x's and o's, how he teaches technique, etc. Let O figure all that out while we sit tight.

Would you have been against hiring Skip Bertman since he had never been a head baseball coach?

Skip had coached under Fraser for 8 years at a national powerhouse program at Miami. He definitely fit the requirements to get hired here when we had not been to the NCAA baseball tourney in 8 years.

Since we just one the whole damned thing in 2019, we should be going with more of an up and coming known quantity over a flier on a guy like Daronte Jones.

Did that guarantee that he would be a good head coach?

It did not, but we were not a perennial top team in college baseball at the time.

How about when Sabn was our 4th choice. Hell we didn’t even have him on the Radar. Saban asked his agent to contact us. Point is coaching searches is a lot about timing.
