Because that information is counter to his goals.

Concur. He’s been with several teams for one year each recently. No promotions to DC, always a DB coach. Too much job hopping with mediocre results. Is the cupboard this bare?

I'm not going to hate on this potential candidate based just on where his NFL team ranked in defense. He coaches a part of that defense, not the overall scheme, and he also happens to coach for the Vikings in a division that includes a couple of absolute deep-field slinger QBs (Rogers, Stafford, in particular). I do know that the Vikes have had some really solid safeties over the past few season, but that's about all I can assess without doing a lot more research on the guy.

I think the important things are not whether the Vikings shut everyone down with their secondary, but whether he can put together a coherent defensive scheme that fits our personnel and matches up well with our opponents (some serious QB/WR combos in the SEC). Also, his ability to make his defensive scheme and assignments simple to grasp for the players so they spend more time acting fast on the field and not thinking slow ... that's the biggest thing with Pelini's defense. It takes a few years of being in the system to grasp it well enough to execute well. He runs a good defensive scheme, but it's too complex to teach and young teams like ours this past year will absolutely fail to execute.

It’s pretty clear to me. It’s a progression from lower tier (HS/FCS/G5 ranks) or lower position to one of higher responsibility. It may be subjective, but it’s still also fairly clear to identify. This guy Jones is not an “up-and-comer” because there has been no evidence of success besides maintaining a job.

I’ll be honest, I know nothing about this guy. I’m not for or against hiring him. I’m speaking in general terms.

He's gone from high school to small college to the CFL to major college to the NFL (where he progressed from assistant DB coach to primary DB coach).

I don't know a lot about him, but his coaching record shows he has progressed significantly.

He's only been in the NFL for 5 years. I think those suggesting he should've been promoted to coordinator already are being disingenuous.

As I recall the last number of years the coaches we the
fans thought were homerun hires,Trent Johnson.Nikki caldwell
Tom Herman, John Chavis( third and chavis) turned out to
be meh.

The claim that Chavis wasn't a good hire is complete revisionist history. Sure, by the end, he had overstayed his welcome, but he was really fricking good for an extended period prior to his departure.

That seems to fit the “up-and-comer” criteria, to me.

Bjorn is being optimistic. He was probably optimistic Pelini. He was also likely optimistic about Ensminger.

Bjorn is an optimist. Which we need on this board! I like what Bjorn brings to TD.

I don’t agree with him. Jones is a guy you have to optimistically talk yourself into..

I’m hoping Jones is a Co-DC with somebody like Travis Williams.

Skip had coached under Fraser for 8 years at a national powerhouse program at Miami. He definitely fit the requirements to get hired here when we had not been to the NCAA baseball tourney in 8 years.

Who was the up and comer who had coached under Bertman for a few years, then succeeded him.
He met your same criteria as Bertman.
