He realized that he would have to be like Saban, and go somewhere he doesn't really want to go, Miami to get the job that he really wants, Gumpville.

dmitch said it was a done deal yesterday and we would hear today. I said there was no chance in hell Gruden took the job.

Gruden likes the attention but he's not taking a paycut or coaching college.

Miami should hire George O'Leary. He would be a great hire for them.

where did i say it was a done deal? i questioned the reasons you thought it was not a done deal.

i do know the offer was there and i know why he turned it down though

i know we chatted a lot yesterday and i may have said it but i dont remember that and dont remember what thread it was in

i do know i asked you what made you so sure you knew what he was thinking.

but he turned it down because of what he wanted for his brother , not because of the money

i know you dont know me and have no reason to believe me, but once a coach is in place it will be told why he turned it down.

i dont think he would have been a good fit anyway, but it did show the school was in attack mode on finding a coach which is good.

the problem now will be the coach wont be a big name like gruden and will seem like a letdown. but it wont take much to win the ACC

Is the Miami job perhaps not that attractive anymore and that's why they still haven't found a coach?

its not that great of a job. bad facilities, which i dont understand, and they have tougher academic standards now then in the jimmy johnson days.

The fact that the future coach could get on a bike ride 10 miles in any direction and recruit top notch talent for every position on that team, and in Mullen's case, the road to the BCS is 1000x easier outweighs the above facts.

A little tougher to win without all the thugs anymore...

Miami has horrible facilities and a poor fan base

Which clearly hasn't bothered them in the past.

As long as the university is committed to the program, Miami is a very good job...and one which you can win big at.

They arent getting Gruden and are too chickenshit to get Leach. That about sums it up I think.

Word is buzzing around that Mullen turned UM down after hearing their offer.

things are a lot different than the late 90s, let alone the 80s

since there has been this push in the early-mid 00s for programs to compete by upgrading facilities, you have seen "da U" become less and less of a premier program

since there has been an explosion in coaching salaries and assistant salaries, you've seen "da U" become less and less of a premier program

to compete on an elite level a school needs a few things

1. lots of local talent, and lots of relatively near/accessible talent
2. a strong booster/donation program
3. lots of gate revenue
4. setting aside about $5M/year for coaching salaries
5. lowering academic standards

UM can do 1 awesome

UM does 2-4 horribly

UM actually has higher entrance standards than the SEC (it has lost recruits before to UF and FSU b/c the kids didn't have the right credits to get enrolled at UM)

I think the revenue and facilities argument is pretty overrated. Over the past decade, Miami and USC have probably have had the two worst set of facilities in the country. Nobody else is really close. As long as you can create a self-perpetuating recruiting strategy where you can sell winning, facilities aren't that important.

It's more important imo for up and coming programs like Oregon, which dont have strong local talent bases and need something unique to sell to recruits

2 of my 4 dealt with money

USC and UM are very similar...almost a yin and yang. private universities with good reputations with an abundance of local talent to inject in your program like heroin

but USC has real CFB tradition, and a real booster/fan base. when the boosters need to organize, they organize. when USC is good, people go to games.

UM doesn't have that history, and i don't think they have a good booster organization (both in the sense of the company itself, and how well it is actually organized)

yea I think the arms race really hurt programs who relied heavily on national recruiting like Tenn, ND, UM, etc.
