Is Gruden really a good hire?

Vol fans, first off, I actually hope you do make a good hire. With the current scheduling format, we're going to play UT about once a decade. Meanwhile, you have the opportunity to hand Bama a loss every year or at least actually start giving them a game.
I get that Gruden is a big name, but:
Never been a college head coach
Hasn't coached for a decade
Going to cost a shite ton of money
How do you even know he's going to be a good recruiter? Because of name brand alone? All that positive energy will go flying out of the door with one bad season. Then what?
This might sound crazy, but I think a guy like Dan Mullen is even a better hire than Gruden. At least he understands the league, the recruiting process and has dealt with 18-22 year old kids for the last decade.

No Gruden is not a good hire.
Yes, Mullen would be a better hire. No, they won't be able to hire him away.

you had me until this.
If Tennessee ponies up on support staff and assistant salaries, he gone.

I'm just looking at this for what it is. It isn't that I don't think he would leave, it's that it isn't fiscally smart to hire him away. Which is why you don't see top 15 salaried coaches hired from their schools. Here are the things to consider:
Mullen averages 5 mil over the next 3, we would match probably 6 at least. So you have to pay him 6-7 per year.
On top of that, he has 16 mil left on contract, you have to buy that out.
UT is already paying Butch to go away I assume.
So assuming a 4 year contract, you're talking about a minimum of 40 mil over the next 4 years. Not including what you have to pay Butch.
--------------------------
TL/DR: UT would effectively be paying Mullen a minimum of 10 million/year for the next four years. Not going to happen.

No. He would be a great hire.

Gruden is and never was going to coach anywhere, especiall UT. This has been a fake legend from the beginning. Kinda like Sasquatch Elvis sightings, after he died. I'd bet that after Gruden passes on to that great broadcast booth in the sky, UT fans will still be passing rumors about his coming to UT to coach.

THIS.
MSU is no destination and quite frankly DM has earned a bigger better job, UT fits that description. He can't go any further with MSU, why would he stay?
UT has all the resources to win it all, just needs a great coach to run the program. I agree that Gruden wouldn't be as good a choice as Mullen (or Patterson, who I'd really like to see get the gig) although if they got Gruden, I'd be happy for them.
He'd be the best coach since Fulmer, but that's not saying much.

I wouldn't be surprised if he was coaching the Giants or Bucs in the NFL. I'd be pretty shocked if he ended up in Knoxville, although I wouldn't hate it. Would make for great TV, that's for sure.

I disagree. His recruiting continues to improve so it only stands to reason that the program will as well. Next year will be the best team he's ever fielded by far.
I won't pretend to know what he wants to do. But I know he has the decision of going to a job that's marginally better, or staying and continuing to build his current job to that tier. Really comes down to what you want to do, be a coach that builds a program or move on and maybe win big sooner.

In the long run, there's probably a good number of coaches that would be a better college coach than Gruden. For the immediate future of the program, UT needs a splash hire like Gruden to revitalize a declining program and apathetic fanbase.

I think Gruden can definitely turn Tampa around. Lots of talent there.

I don't know. He's never been a college coach and hasn't coached in a decade. He's a big name and that'd be about all you could say about it until he proves otherwise.
If they could poach a Dan Mullen, I'd argue that'd be a much better hire than Gruden. Not as splashy a name but it's easier to project him having success there than an unknown commodity in Gruden.

I don't get the obsession with Gruden, because of the reasons you mentioned. He's a complete unknown at the college level.

No, he would fail. Maybe not right away because of the initial publicity leading to solid recruiting, but in year 3+ he would start to fail miserably.
He wasn't even that good of a coach in the NFL and has no idea how to coach college kids, much less recruit them.
This will be a disaster and I can't fricking wait

It's a GREAT hire (for the rest of the East)

Is Gruden scared to take the Vols job?
Posted on 11/16/17 at 3:02 pm to TheCaterpillar
The suspected positive impact on recruiting may be able to sustain him for a couple years. Its as good of a hire as any not named Saban/Meyer/etc.......but if I was a UT'er, I'd prefer Mullen.

It's extremely unlikely that he owes MSU the remainder of what they would have paid him if he leaves for another job. This would only be true if he has the worst agent in the history of agents.
