Impact on the SEC West if Mullen goes to Florida

During the last ten years or so, the SEC West has become murderers row, the worst team in the West could have probably have competed for champion in some other conferences. Part of that dynamic was the resurgence of the two Mississippi teams, Ole Miss under Freeze and State under Mullen.
These things can be cyclical, there were years when the East was stronger. With the disaster that has happened in Oxford, the West seems weaker this year.
Mullen probably does more with less than just about any other coach in the SEC. If he leaves State for Florida, it would be a huge setback for State and for the foreseeable future the two Mississippi schools could have some really down years. If Florida and Tennessee have a hard time getting top coaches, how hard will it be for Ole Miss and State?
If Florida was not our permanent opponent, getting Mullen out of Starkville would probably help the Tigers. I am not saying Mullen is a great coach, but it seems pretty clear he has done a great job at State without top facilities and in a state where there are not a bunch of recruits and where he has to compete with Ole Miss, Bama, LSU and Auburn for the top in state recruits they have.
He says he is not interested in Florida, but we all know how that works. If Mullen leaves State, State could be looking at some down years ahead. It might take Ole Miss a few recruiting cycles if they get a good hire to get out of the hole they are in.

it'll be nice getting back to two automatic wins with State and Ole Miss

Well nothing seems automatic for LSU anymore, but I think its fair to say Ole Miss has a huge hill to climb to get back to being as competitive as they were under Freeze. They are looking at two down recruiting classes in a row even if the NCAA doesn't slam them.
Miss State, I think, would have a every hard time replacing Mullen and holding onto the class they have if he leaves.
I think the West would be less competitive, which is kind of good and bad. The east has it so much easier with Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Missouri right now. It would even things out a bit.

I’d be interested to see how much State would spend. It would be a good opportunity for someone like Kiffin.

What if Miss State hires Kiffin?
Also, nothing should be viewed as a “gimme win” for lsu in SEC play.

State is probably set from a recruiting standpoint for the next four or five years with Ole Miss facing probation. Whoever would step in should have a recruiting advantage in the state that no other coach has enjoyed.

If you mean all conferences, sure. If you mean power 5 conferences, no.

MSU is one of the few places I could see hiring Les and Les accepting. That would be interesting for recruiting.

I do not see Les in the SEC now... not in the WEST for sure.
If he does not win right away ...the ghosts of LSU will resurface quickly

Time to open the coaching changes board.

He'll quit in the middle of the 2018 season and leave a trail of recruiting violations.

Agree. With piss down for years and Ms being a talent rich state I think Msu can be very good the next few years. O needs to take advantage of the uncertainty in coaching ranks. Good chance for Lsu being the best option next to Bama. Kindof like it was a few years ago. O has always wanted another chance to prove he can be a solid HC. Well he was given a lottery winner thanks to alleva. He has a golden opportunity to do some good things at Lsu. And I believe again.. he can get it done.

Mississippi State is in an interesting position. With Ole Miss looking to be down for at least the next 5 probably closer to ten years, if (under the scenario Dan left for UF) State could put a guy that could lock up MS recruiting wise then they could have a shot at making State a legitimate powerhouse.
The better they do, the farther down it will push Ole Miss, Saban will be out evenually(I give him 4 more years of being unbeatable, and a couple years of just being 10-2 level), LSU hired Orgeron, A&M and Arkansas are both a mess, and Auburn is a rollercoaster. That’s an ideal opportunity for State to make a pretty serious run.

Mullen will not go to Florida. Strickland does not get along with him. Heard this on two national shows already.
Florida needs a splash hire. They just fired a guy who won the East two years in a row. Not going for a lateral move. Chip Kelly or Scott Frost type hire for the wide open offense. Plenty of speed in Florida so its a good fit.

Are we looking for Miss St to make another "groundbreaking hire", possibly a Sly Croom Part Deux?

State's facilities, particularly for football, are pretty good. They'd be top-tier in about any conference in the country.
Not many people know that State's Davis-Wade Stadium has 132 suites, more than any school in the country except Arkansas 133 (soon to have 172) Alabama, 162 IIRC, and LSU, 136. (Tennessee will be adding 15 more suites to it's current 120 soon.)
It's probably the best 60K stadium in the country, with amenities not found in most larger stadiums.
The Leo Seal Jr. Football Complex (80,000 square feet.) was just built in 2013...
...and it's adjacent to the MSU Football Practice Fields (three full-sized fields)...
..and the Palmeiro Center is not bad at all for an indoor practice field (also doubles as indoor practice field for baseball)...
The idea that Miss. State has no or inferior facilities is out of date. Virtually everyone except the very richest college programs would be happy to have facilities like these.
