It’s his alma mater and a chance to be a head coach with a giant raise. I see your concern…

I can't fault him. It's his alma mater, it's an opening now that might not happen for 3-6 years later.
He has a good name as a DC and would be a good hire on paper for Tulane.
Waiting to find the right situation at a P4 might be a while and the ropes aren't as long at a P4 school as they are at an FBS school. So it would be a good way to get HC experience and learn it in a much less pressure situation.

Dave is what... 36-37 as a HC? He might be back in a DC role before you know it.

Sit at LSU a few more years and then take a legitimate HC position in a legitimate conference. Nothing against Tulane, but it just seems like the better career move.

Please stop this idiotic take.

How does Baker show big time programs he made Tulane better?

By maintaining Tulane’s success.

Are you stupid?

Ffs…he can show other schools that he can run an entire program and not just the defense. If Baker can’t win 9 or 10 games at Tulane with how they are set up then he isn’t head coaching material.

I really don't think one is a significant advantage over the other. Both require elite success (relative).

Agreed. It all boils down to what Baker feels like is his best path to land an elite job. He might feel like he needs to be a head coach on a smaller scale before jumping into a power job. If he can’t win at Tulane it’s not like he can’t become a DC at a power school again.

Probably a slight increase in salary and that is his alma mater.

Very true

He won't get offers for a premium head coaching job while still a DC.

This however, is false. Are Oregon or Georgia not premium head coaching jobs? Their current coaches were DCs in the SEC with no HC experience when they were hired. I could name a lot more that have happened over the years as well.

That isn't to say taking the Tulane job is a wrong move. That's also a path to a higher gig if he succeeds, plus it's his alma mater. But I just have to push back on the idea that he couldn't land a big gig if he stayed the DC here because it's just demonstrably untrue.

How many posters on here from every fanbase spout, "We don't want anyone without HC experience! We're not an OJT school"? Of course he wants to take a HC job at a smaller program to cut his teeth.

This ain’t your dad’s Tulane. They have been prey fricking good the last 4 years. It’s the best 4 year run in school history.

12-2
11-3
9-5
10-2

I agree. BB might feel like he needs to try it on a smaller level before jumping into a bigger gig. Tulane is set up to win. If he can’t keep the ball going at Tulane then he isn’t ready to be a head coach.

Everyone say it with me, "it's not your dad's Tulane.

They have an easy path and can buy players now that their alumni have discovered winning is fun.
