I believe he or any other unemployed coach would have been announced earlier just to quiet the transfer portal and nervous recruits.
Of course that leaves 99.99% of the candidates still in the running.

No coach was going to be announced until after the last regular season game...I believe O and Woodward mutually agreed to that. I believe O negotiated a bunch of things on his way out, including not distracting his exit with the announcement of a new coach.
