Rich rod was an established winner at west Virginia, not an up and comer. Was a terrible fit at Michigan with his offense and their athletes.

A little reverse psychology there Gump?
Translation: Don't hire a good coach LSU because I'm scared

The reason I really not a fan is inside 10 he has no power running game. LSU defense has faced TCU and Oregon with this type offense and it did not work. Same with Bama D. I think a pro style offense with our Defense is the best situation for LSU.
For that I really don't think the Offense Bama is running is going to make it in Bama. The QB gets hit to many times in that offense and in the SEC where everyone plays defense or atleast in the West it will be an issue.

You have way simplified someone's approach to coaching and know none of TH's coaching philosophy.
...not to say you are 100% wrong, but my perspective of reading/watching him is that he would adapt to the situation. If we miss on him, it would be a bad thing, but then again we could find another...who knows.

I am just not a fan but if he is at LSU I will be his biggest fan. But if I had to choose I would go Jimbo first.

Honestly, I think hiring a guy who has had some success at a lower Power-5 school is probably a better indicator of future success. But, nothing is guaranteed.
Frick, if LSU were to land Jimbo Fisher it would be a monstrous homerun hire. It doesn't get much better than poaching a coach that has already won a National Championship at another big-name program. Even then, Jimbo is not a guarantee of success at LSU. It is just very probable that he would be.
Tom Herman sets off all kinds of red flags for me. Primarily the fact that:
1. He has had 1 recruiting class.
2. He plays 2 teams a year (at most) that are not bottom barrel in the entire nation.
He sure does look good right now though. But, I'd like to see where Houston would be in another 3 or 4 years if he was still there coach. Or, see how he could handle a lower Power 5 team.
But, we won't get that luxury because someone will take a chance on him this year.

My biggest concern with Herman is can he recruit for multiple years and win. He's been good with other people's recruits but can he sustain it with his own for 4-5 years. That's why I think Jimbo needs to be #1. These crazy athletic QB's aren't easy to find and play at this high of a level. Let UT keep experimenting. I think Herman has the highest ceiling but is also the most likely to struggle. He's definitely my #2 though.
It's almost a 1A and 1B.

He is using Ohio State's offense. Ohio State has no problems with their running game. It has been the best in the country over the last 3 years.
He has a limited inside running game at Houston because he has a 185 lbs quarterback and less studs on the OL and at RB. At OSU he was running it with Miller/Barrett/Jones who are all over 200 and Jones was a truck.
I don't think anyone is a guarantee homerun hire, but I don't think he has many question marks.
Went through the grind and wasn't handed a good job: check
Learned under good coaches (Mack Brown and Urban): check
Has beaten good teams at a lower level job: check
Can recruit: check
In reality, a head coach is only great if his OC and DC are good as well. It's one of the reasons why Saban/Meyer have been successful. Look at their coordinators (Strong, Mullen, Herman, Smart, Kiffin, Pruitt, Durkin) and you see some of the best in the business on their sides of the ball.

Who knows? Maybe you're right. He currently has an 18-1 head coaching record at Houston with some impressive wins (particularly over Florida State and Oklahoma).
However, I'd love for Texas to "roll the dice" and take the risk on Herman. If he fails...well...I wouldn't be upset as I can't fault the administration for trying.

Talk about a complete overhaul. Much like Bill Callahan taking over a Frank Solich Nebraska team, you've got to re-recruit players at every position to implement that type of system. That's something that takes years and years to do.
Also, Hoke appeared to reap the benefits of Rodriguez's recruiting with that Sugar Bowl win.

Surefire hire. Can't miss young offensive genius. Give him the keys to the Porsche. Watch him run it into a tree.
Rich Rod is more like Jimbo Fisher than Herman, he had already been a head coach for 7 years and was fully proven.

Thanks for the tip Nostradamous.
THERE IS NO MAGIC FORMULA. We can sit here the live long day and list examples and counter examples of coaches that did and did not pan out. It is pointless. There are a million and one factors that determine whether a coach will succeed at a place or not, most are unknown before he gets the job.

Rich Rod was a bad match for the type of athletes Michigan gets. But you could be correct. Anyone but Saban and Urban is a bit of a crap shoot.

and both those guys were total crap shoots at one point as well. I mean who would have predicted a coach that was 34-24-1 at Michigan State would win LSU's firs National Title in 45 years?

Rich rod inherited an untalented group.. and after two seasons was fired before an 11-2 run. That's a joke tbh. He had them going in the right direction, was recruiting well, and was implementing a new system.

Sure there is- hire Nick Saban or Urban Meyer.
That is why delusional Texas boosters keep going back to that dry well.

Herman's offfense in Texas works way better than Rich r"Rods in Michigan.
