As a Cowboys fan I was hoping he would get a shot as head coach when Garrett got fired. He would be a fantastic defensive coordinator for LSU

Are you serious? Richard was mediocre at best as the DBs coach for Cowboys. He’s be a mediocre hire for LSU

He is interviewing &he initiated the contact. Assume that means he is interested. I trust Coach O, he's more than proven himself.

He's overrated and has never run a defense on his own in reality. His entire time has been either as an assitant with some playcalling duties herer and there (Cowboys) or under a great defensive minded head coach that actually ran the defense (Carroll).

This guy has proved very little IMO that is tangible in justifying his hiring as an actual DC.

Yeah you know way more than Coach O when it comes to coaches.

I can think of $2-2.5 M reasons he'd come to LSU.

They're not going to give him that type of money. Aranda had to earn that raise.

Just wants to be the guy who called it when O hires a guy he already knew.

Most are going to look at Richard’s time in Seattle, but ignore his most recent job with the Cowboys.

Coaching DBs is a lot easier when Richard Sherman, Kam Chancelor, and Earl Thomas are anchoring your secondary.

Plus, Pete Carroll built his reputation as a DB coach.

That was my point. You have to take the success of coaches that are in that type of position with a grain of salt.

Richard may be good, but he doesn't honestly have anything to prove he'd be a great DC as of right now.

So are you just giving the guy no credit for his time in Seattle or what?

The Cowboys finished in the top 10 in passing yards allowed this year. They finished 13 last year.

Seattle finished 2, 8 and 6 his three years at their DC.

In total defense, his Seattle teams finished 2, 5 & 11 in total yards.

In scoring defense, he finished 1, 3, & 13 in Seattle.

In 2018, Dallas finished 6 in scoring defense, they finished 11 in 2019.

This is well above mediocre by NFL standards.

You guys really think that a guy who routinely trots out top 10 defenses in the NFL can't have major success at LSU?

Edit: also, as for his dip in 2017 in Seattle. That team was kind of a mess and got ravaged by injuries.

Edit: that was not the same year Earl Thomas flipped Carroll off

I am not saying no credit but you can’t ignore the fact that his DC stint as under a defense already developed AND with the head coach being who put it in place.

In Dallas, he’s been a DB coach for the most part and some claim he had some playcalling duties, but that’s unclear.

At LSU, he’d have to be in charge of everything. No proof he can do that.

I said the exact same stuff about Brady and came out looking like an idiot. Coach O has nailed his past few hires. So I'm going to refer from judgement. Between Coach O and Woodward, I have faith the right decision will be made.

Why did Pete fire him?

1) They dropped from the #1 scoring defense in the NFL to 13th.

2) They missed the playoffs, for the first time in forever. And then returned the year after he is fired.

3) Richard is THE ONLY def. coord. that Pete has ever fired. Ever.

That speaks volumes.

They finished #9, #4, #1, & #1 the four years before Richard took over.

This was Carroll's defense.

I like Richard and LSU is a good fit but living in Dallas and following the cowboys, his units and his value regressed every year.

The secondary was pitiful and he almost got fired in the season.

He’s good but people are making him out to be the GOAT.

How many interviews has he had in the NFL since being let go for all those coordinator and HC jobs? Exactly

If what is being floated around is true, Carroll actually recommended this guy to O. I have no idea if that's true but if it is, that would be an awfully big endorsement in my book!

Most coordinators don’t stay in one spot long. They either succeed and move on to be a head coach or they stink and get demoted and/or fired. To expect any coordinator to stay longer than 2 or 3 years is unrealistic unless it’s an older coach like Kevin Steele.

Steele’s situation is unique: He failed badly as a head coach, had a spotty history as a DC and he wanted to go back to the Alabama state system for retirement benefits. Brent Venables is another unique case: He’s paid well and selective about his next stop.

Aranda was here 4 years because he was well compensated and didn’t actively seek head coaching jobs until the past year.
