They finished #9, #4, #1, & #1 the four years before Richard took over.

This was Carroll's defense

So he gets blamed for the dip in 2017, but not the success in the other years?

Dan Quinn was a really good DC, too. Don't underestimate his importance in Seattle's defensive success before Richard took over.

I'm not trying to argue he's the best fit for the job, I'm just taking exception to guys saying his defenses in the NFL were "mediocre."

In Dallas, he’s been a DB coach for the most part and some claim he had some playcalling duties, but that’s unclear.

That’s a trademark of most coaching staffs with the Cowboys. Jerry usually hires a few coaches, the head coach will hire a few, and the coordinators might have a say on a position coach or two.

Most think Richard was the de facto DC, and Marinelli had handed over most of his coordinator duties. Who knows how much control Richard had over the defense, but he was definitely in charge of DBs.

The Cowboys struggled to get consistent pressure on the QB, which puts a lot of pressure on the DBs. Also, the lack of Ints has really plagued Dallas recently. They intercept very few passes. Sometimes that’s coaching and scheme, but a lot of times it’s the lack of playmakers in the secondary.

You have a very intelligent defensive minded coach with 40+ years of coaching experience at the college & NFL level in Pete Carroll who has fielded elite defenses on every team he's been in charge of since the 1990s, with multiple different coaching staffs.

I don't think it's that controversial to argue that he had more to do with Seattle's success than Richard has.

If you apply this logic, one might conclude Orgeron had more to do with LSU's success on defense than Aranda.

Seattle's defenses were top 5 in 2 of Richard's seasons and top 10 in scoring all 3 years. Pete Carroll is an excellent coach, but he doesn't call the plays. He delegates to his coaches. Where do you think Orgeron learned the importance of this?

But let's suspend reality for a moment and pretend Richard had nothing to do with the success of the Seattle defense. His Dallas defenses were great last year and above average this year, despite not having a single pro bowler.

Richard is a good NFL defensive coordinator. He might not be great, or elite, but he's proven over 5 years to be good. Apparently he comes highly recommended by Carroll, and nobody knows why he wasn't retained after 2017.

Anyway, there are several question marks about Richard, but his performance as an NFL coordinator shouldn't be one of them.

My questions are:
Can he recruit?
How long would he stay?
How will his personality fit with the rest of the staff? I've read he's pretty fiery and wondered if he and Orgeron might end up butting heads.

Aranda has fielded very good defenses under multiple HC's at multiple programs.

That "logic" makes absolutely zero sense

2 for Richard, being fired from his first. And he wasn't even DC for his second stop.

Compared to 7 stops for Aranda, always the DC, and constantly moving on to better programs on his own terms.

Again, not a good comparison

Richard has fielded

Very debatable

At Seattle, Richard was given the reigns to what Carroll had designed & implemented. 3 years later, he was let go.
At Dallas, Richard was in charge of DBs & given play calling duties for what Marinelli had designed and implemented.

If he is hired by Orgeron, this will be the first time in his coaching career he will be asked to build a defense from scratch.

For me, I think that is extremely risky, and would prefer someone with a longer, and more proven, track record.

Guy has been in the NFL since 2010, he isn't coming back to coach in college.

Then why would he even agree to interview?

You’re a real dick. Pete’s a legend, he wasn’t forced to do anything.
