This is more than likely what’s going on.

When did Orgeron do a complete 180 from the style of offense he said he wanted just a few weeks ago? Gilbert, Briles, and several other names being thrown around are even further from what he wants than what Canada’s offense was.

Everyone keeps saying Gilbert is Briles without the baggage. Where does this come from? Is the offensive system he runs just coincidentally similar to the Briles offense or did he learn it from Briles? Because I’m not seeing where he has worked under them in any way and it is often said that only the Briles’ and those that worked under them really know Art’s offense. Just curious where the sentiment comes from.

Gilbert is making $100k right now. Aleva will offer him $1.5M/3yrs. with a huge buyout.

He spent a year as OC at Tulsa under the guy who was OC at Baylor before Kendall was. They run the same exact system.

Because it’s the same system, Veer and Shoot. Both were under the Art Briles coaching tree

I presume he only makes $100k because he’s still collecting a buyout from Texas. I think he was close to $750k-$1mil at UT

Babers is probably the link.

ETA: And Montgomery.

Within the realm of actual possibility, who do you suggest we get that is going to be better than Gilbert?

The Veer and Shoot at LSU is almost too good to be true. 100% behind this hire.

On the surface, the biggest reason to like the addition of Gilbert is because he has extensive ties to the Art Briles coaching tree after working with Briles himself at Houston and then serving as the offensive coordinator for Briles proteges in Dino Babersand Phillip Montgomery.

He was a GA at Houston under Briles.

Indirectly learned that offense from other assistants that worked with Briles like Dino Babers at Bowling Green I think and Montgomery at Tulsa. You're correct that he never worked directly under Briles but he did work with those guys who took it with them. His offense isn't exactly the same obviously but it's the same concepts.

ETA: I stand corrected on him not working directly under Briles. Didn't realize he was GA for him there.

Thanks all for responses. I was reading S. FL bio and there wasn’t anything about him coming from Briles coaching tree that I was seeing.

If we could get our WRs developed, then this offense could be a smash here. It could work with either Brennan or Narcisse, too. It puts a lot of pressure on defense with balance.

Would love to see our RBs running against Bama without 20 human beings in the way at the line of scrimmage

Still prefer Yurcich, but Gilbert is worlds better than some of the other options that have been thrown around.

Gilbert was getting paid 850k at Texas. I'm not sure about this if he is the guy. Reading different things from fans at south Florida, doesn't sound like they will be disappointed if he leaves. LSU had higher ranked offense in 2016 than UT.
