quote:

In our initial reporting back on Saturday, Jan. 2, we stated that Notre Dame was set to have a Zoom call with Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman on Monday, Jan. 4. At that point, we also reported that if things went well, he would be brought in later that week for an in-person interview either Tuesday or Thursday, with a visit to LSU likely taking place as well. On Monday, we reported that the call went well and Freeman was waiting to hear about when he’d be in South Bend.

Well, things have moved quickly, as Irish Illustrated has learned through a source that Freeman was actually at Notre Dame today, on Tuesday, as he was interviewing for the defensive coordinator opening. We will do what we can to find out exactly how things went. We do know that Notre Dame was hoping to have the last crack at him later this week, but it seems this visit fit Freeman's schedule best.

We’re told Freeman will now head to Baton Rouge for an interview at LSU, which is expected to take place either Wednesday or Thursday.

I think Freeman is a Midwest guy and will take ND if money is right

Local scuttlebutt up here in South Bend indicates that Brian and Jack were impressed enough with Freeman that they want to make him the guy. They are selling him on program stability and cleanliness of the program, the luster of ND, and that they are thisclose to breaking through and he is apart of making that history.

Yeah, that's a bunch of BS.

We may offer him more than Kelly makes. That with the talent on the roster we just cross our fingers and hope it all works out.

If O fails to get him in this is a big blow up.

Texas spent weeks working on Sark and getting it done. Hopefully O has been doing the same and not just playing grabass with his girl.

Also laughable that ND wants to claim they run a clean program. Last I checked they are part of a church that rapes and covers it up and Kelly killed a student and they ignored that.

This. LSU will offer more than ND could ever dream to offer. He also will have better talent and a bigger stage to showcase his abilities as a coach. It should be a no brainer.

Which part? We consistently pay our OC's nearly one million a year more than ND can even pay their head coach. We're going to offer triple what they offer. Our defensive players are more talented. Our competition is more talented. Which part is not objectively true?

It's better if we interview him last. I don't see a problem with him going to ND before us.

I don't for a second believe that all Brian Kelly makes at Notre Dame is 1.8 million. I call BS on that. They are a private school and they release what they want to release. I would be willing to bet that Brian Kelly makes 7-8 million a year at Notre Dame all in. No way he is not getting paid money through other means that's not on the ND Books. If he has stuck around ND that long to only get paid that then from a financial standpoint (only) he's an idiot.

If he chooses ND, he's not looking to be a one year and done coach. If he chooses LSU, he's looking at upward mobility.
His impact as a DC has a much better chance to be seen from a defense where the statistical bar is so low that it would be easy to cross.

Exactly. He's looking for the best stepping stone for his career. Not to mention he has a big family and can't ignore the pay difference.

Btw, I seriously doubt that if ND offers him extra money under the table he's going to sign a relatively tiny contract and count on the secret money.
