Negotiation isn't giving and giving more and waiting for your target's window. At some point, you have to draw a line, both with regards to time and money.

If the story is true that Alleva refused to be held hostage by Herman's timeline with Texas and that the money discussion had gotten unpalatable, then you could easily argue that Alleva did the right thing from a negotiation perspective.

Now, you could certainly still bemoan the O hire, but not due to negotiation skills.

We're not blasting his "negotiation skill" or lack thereof

We're blasting him cuz he spent about 5 minutes courting Herman and Fisher before giving up and settling for fricking Orgeron.

Ok fine, there are still at least 6 or 7 other coaches clearly more qualified for this job than O.

Alleva didn't want to be in a position where he was forced to settle...and risk his own firing

Again, O was gonna wait for eternity to be the LSU coach. He wasn't going anywhere.

LSU admin acted hastily.

It was a pride thing. And we are fricked over someone who got their feelings hurt.

He let a guy who's never been a P5 coach and who's value lies in potential dictate the negotiating process. Joe is horrible at negotiating. Why do you think he keeps hiring the local guys? It's easier to negotiate when the other person has a vested personal interest in something and not just about money

He had almost the entire season to look for a coach, and we hire our fricking D-line coach?

I'm sorry but that's shitty.

Nothing like working real hard for 2 days after you spend 2 months playing with yourself in your office before suddenly realizing the deadline is approaching for that big project. But then again, I've never had any projects turn out this poorly.

I'm not blasting his negotiation skills (which seem to be pretty subpar)

I'm blasting his lack of due diligence. Only 3 coaches considered? Please.

He undervalued Herman and overvalued O. Period. That's fine if you are content with 3rd and 4th place finishes each year and never beating Bama again.

He lost all leverage by firing Miles in September.

There was no time limit on this hire. No one said you have to name a coach by noon on Saturday. He had since last year to do a coaching search and is taking a Top 5 revenue football program and turned it over to a position coach that failed at a lower Sec school. So yeah his "negotiation" skills are pure shite, only interviewed 3 canidates for a Top 10 job, one of which was already on campus running a propaganda campaign that would make the Nazis and Japanese blush. Might want to google "Negotiation Skills" again.

You can say he's never been a P5 coach but he had the leverage because he had even more suitors than Jimbo.

Who cares about a Texas window?

Let him listen to Texas. When I apply for a job I don't just go to one place.

It's not like people we beating down the doors to get Orgeron. He would have been there.

He should have went for Herman in the beginning and had an agreement in place for the end of the season.

Hiring O is the essence of settling.
