How involved was he with Smoke when he took over? I know he took over as AD, but did he still have his hands in the baseball program on a regular basis?
To be more clear, I am not referring to the hiring process but more of the day to day operation of the baseball program post retirement.

He became the AD when he retired from coaching so he was pretty involved with the hiring

Wasn't Smoke his handpicked successor? We all saw how that disaster went.

Clearly you have no clue! Smoke was a disaster hire! If you're basing his success off of going to a few college world series then I don't think you can be helped! He went with Skips players!
I'll back it up with numbers.
2003 - 45-22-1
2004 - 44-22
2005 - 40-22 (lost 12 SEC games)
2006 - 35-24 (missed the NCAAT for the first time in 18 years and was fired)
Point is, he won with Skips players and he stopped recruiting. He thought players would just come to LSU because it was LSU.

Smoke is a solid, knowledgable baseball guy. Still a scout in the Braves system, last I heard. Great teacher as an assistant. Guys who played when he was an assistant here still love him.
Being the HC of a dynastic program was too big of a job for him. Not everybody is cut out to be a head coach.

Bama fans are about to learn. Skip won 5 national titles in the 11 years prior to his retirement. LSU certainly did not fall to mediocrity after he left. We won many SEC titles, we went to Omaha on a pretty regular basis.
But LSU won 1 national title in the 21 years that followed Skip. While LSU was still an elite team in the SEC and college baseball, it no longer dominated college baseball and other teams caught up to LSU and had passed them. (Jay Johnson 22 years later has LSU back on top and is poised for a great run, but it has been 22 years of having to share the trophies)
I see a similar future for Bama football. They will still be very good, but the sport of college football will not run through Tuscaloosa alone.

eh, he didn't stop recruiting, he just recruited like a dumbass. He'd sign nothing but kids who would never make it to campus and was left with scraps who had no business playing for LSU.

Smoke was hired the year before Skip actually retired, he was the asst. coach (HC in waiting) they year before.

It's moreso a pay your respects type of deal now for Jay Johnson to Skip Bertman.
It's definitely Jay Johnson's program.
Skip isn't around the facilities nearly as much as he was for Mainieri.
