It has long been rumored that should Brian Kelly elect to move on from Notre Dame someday, the NFL would be his next stop.

This morning, radio guys at 670 The Score share that Kelly has emerged as a “coach of interest” in the Bucs search to replace Dirk Koetter. The report adds that team ownership is prepared to offer their next head coach an annual salary in the $10 million range.

In 2018, Kelly led Notre Dame to the College Football Playoff and an undefeated season after eventually losing to Clemson to end their year.

In South Bend, Kelly is 81-35 overall. Combine that with head coaching stops at Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State (118-35-2), Central Michigan (19-16), and Cincinnati (34-16) and Kelly has proven he can win big everywhere. At Grand Valley State, he led the program to back-to-back national titles in 2002 and 2003 before leaving for Central Michigan, where he quickly turned the Chips program around, going 9-4 in his final season in 2006. In three full seasons at Cincinnati, Kelly hit the double digit win mark each season from 2006-09 before landing the head coaching job with the Irish heading in 2010.

So stay tuned to Urban Meyer's retirement party.

Seems like that would go a lot like Schiano. Hard arse shtick doesn't generally work in the NFL.

As a Saints fan, I can only hope. This has crash and burn written all over it.

It would be interesting to watch.

Brian Kelly has topped out at Notre Dame. He can go no further. I have no doubt he could win NC's at USC / LSU / Florida / etc, but Notre Dame is a lost cause.

Personally, I think Brian Kelly is a smart man. He'll know that he can't swagger into an NFL locker room and behave like a dictator. I bet he'd adjust his behavior to better suit the NFL game.

Schiano... love the man, and he did great things for Rutgers, but he's an a-hole.

I heard the Bucs have also sweetened the deal by offering up two interns for him to murder. That may whet his thirst for blood.

This feels like Kelly's agent floating rumors to get an increase at ND given he just crapped the bed (again) in his biggest game.

Sounds like Kelly's agent is trying to squeeze ND while the gettin's are good. I seriously doubt Tampa is legitimately willing to pay $10 mill to a guy who has had some occasional great years at a historic CFB powerhouse, but is otherwise known as a complete horse's arse. He doesn't have the skins on the wall to be a totalitarian dictator in a NFL locker room.

I suspect ND already pays Kelly well and his agent knows (1) the big dollar college teams aren't looking for a coach right now and (2) it's unlikely ND goes 12-0 next season. This may be his LAST shot to try to leverage a huge payday out of ND.

Kelly goes to NFL on Wednesday. Urban is head coach at Notre Dame by Friday.

The only reason he wouldn’t is if part of his “retirement” terms from Ohio State is he has to sit out from coaching for a certain amount of time.

If he goes we’re about to see how sick Urban is. He’s always thought ND was the “it” job

I have always heard the Glazers were cheap. $10 million seems like more than they would be willing to pay.

Might as well go to NFL. ND will not let him stay past or break knute Rockne tenure.
