Derek Mason runs a 3-4...Rantards are falling over themselves to get him here.

For one, that’s a false equivalency. The people in group 1 are not the people in group 2

For two, those are completely different scenarios. Derek Mason just got fired after going 0-8, we can tell him to run a 4-3, we can pay him pennies to do it, and we could tell him to do it all while wearing a pink tutu. Because he needs us much more than we need him.

Jim Leonard on the other hand, is already richer than our head coach is, is currently in the same role we could offer at his alma mater where his system is completely in place, and has zero threat of losing his job. Not to mention is probably a year away from getting head coaching offers. So if somehow we were able to offer him enough cash to get his head turned, and he somehow wasn’t concerned that we paid our last DC similar money and then canned him in less than a years time, he wouldn’t be accepting the job once we let him know that we kind of have to run a 4-3 because our HC ran out a bunch of talented 3-4 players because he was dedicated to switched to a more attacking 4-3 defense and now we are scrambling to rebuild the roster following a national championship so if we switch back now then we are going to start that cycle over again

And to make it clear, I am not the one who is devoted to the 4-3, just that our situation requires it due to what we have done in the recent past with our roster construction and planning

Not true. Because if that happened, it would mean they didnt even try to look elsewhere.

Absolute stupidity. Do you think he just made the decision to part ways with Pelini this week? Do you think maybe he had a list of possible candidates ready to go?

derek mason is a guru of a DC.

why is this board opposed to him?

frick this board. Mason is a viable DC candidate. Whether he "will be announced next week" is accurate or not is another matter. Most posters on TD have no clue whatsoever, especially the so-called gurus.

This is absolute horseshite. I've read an actual insider on a pay site explicitly say that this is not happening.

OP you are supposed to add "unless something crazy happens between now and then". That's the way the real "insiders" do it to save face when it doesn't happen. Just ask DALSU.

He was highly regarded at Stanford

What he did at Stanford 8 years ago is irrelevant to today's game. College offenses are COMPLETELY different than what made him successful there. This is what a lot of you are missing with these Mason, Muschamp, etc hires. Samd reason Bo sucks arse as a DC now.

Things may have not worked out at Vanderbilt but I’ve always heard Derek Mason has a very bright and capable defensive mind. Hell Vandy beat Tennessee 3 years in a row and went to a few bowl games. His problem was he was coaching Vandy against minor league NFL teams. Mason was very good at Stanford as both a DC and DB coach. When he was DC they use to slow Oregon down when the Ducks were blowing people out. NFL coaches flocked to Stanford to pick Mason’s mind on how to slow down the college offenses that were filtering into the NFL. SEC coaches respect the hell out of Derek Mason. With the athletes LSU has Mason should be an excellent hire to shore up our defensive woes.

I don’t give a shite what color a person is. The question is can he stop offense from passing for 500 yds a game.

I don’t understand why one of our coordinators HAS to be black. Shouldn’t we hire the most qualified guy for the job regardless of wether they are black, white, yellow, magenta or neon green?

Maybe not about football. They refuse to update the facilities.

The baseball program and the basketball programs are nothing at all to scoff about.

Yeah and his success at Stanford as DC had nothing to do with the fact that his head coach’s offense was a clock eating machine with a ton of ground and pound. That won’t fly with LSU’s new offensive philosophy, just ask Aranda or Chavis when he went to A&M. At least Aranda eventually adapted towards the end of ‘19

If Mason gets the job and no one else is even considered I’m convinced CEO was told to or was dead set on hiring a black coach and he thinks this is the best option that’s out there. It may be a smart move now with the times, but I think it’s the wrong guy. A great DC doesn’t have the defense get worse and worse every single year like he did, and that female kicker PR stunt is just embarrassing.

One of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen posted.

What’s this have to do with his DC abilities?
