_________
John Harbaugh, Rex Ryan, etc and etc?
so we think we can get any NFL head coach to come back to college now? Lets be real.

Didn't say we could get them, asking what makes him better than them. If you want it stated differently, what makes him better than an average head coach? I didn't think average was desirable.

Del Rio is 57-55 and has never won his division. What makes him more desirable than Petersen, who has 2 Fiesta bowl wins
How many years did Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Bob Sanders and Reggie Wayne play together in the Big Sky Conference?
____________________
They only play Indy 2 times a year. He has lost 20 in the last 2. Besides, if he comes here will you be happy losing to UF and UA every year?
___________
And for those who argue that Jacksonville is a tough place to win I give you....Sean Payton
again, your point is that there are better NFL coaches than JDR? Great.
____________
My point is that there are better coaches everywhere. As I explained earlier, I was just addressing a common defense of his mediocre record --- he plays in a tough place to win.
____________
ETA: Del Rio is 12-20 over the last two years, the relevant period for most folks here. Seems to me that he is running Jacksonville into the ground.
FYI, you don't get to play ULL, Vandy, MSU, Washington, Tulane and La Tech in the NFL.
______________
No, but he had trouble handling St. Louis and Cleveland. ULL and Vandy may be better. 12-20. Are you telling me that LSU fans would be happy with consecutive losing seasons?
Again, what makes him such a good coach? He was a good DC. Wonderful. Call Monte Kiffin. He was better. I understand the other pipe dreams around here. Gruden, Shanahan and Cower won Superbowls. Stoops has a BCS NC. Meyer and Saban the same and Saban has history here. Del Rio has...an apartment in New Orleans (maybe)?

So does Nick Saban, but I think I said that some coaches just weren't cut out to be NFL coaches. Carroll's pro record is 33-31, hardly stellar.
Nice try.

JDR is suffering from the fall out of two poor personnel decisions:
the Leftwich era
followed by:
the Garrard era
Garrard is a stand up guy that will make a great coach one day but he is easily the most inconsistent starting QB in the NFL. If JAX played all 16 games at home they would 12-4 every year with Garrard.
Since JAX gave Garrard the big contract JDR is tied to him. HOWEVER with the uncapped year coming I fully expect Garrard to be cut. There are some crazy personnel moves coming from all over the League this off season.

del rio would be an upgrade for us.
i think he would be a fantastic recruiter and would build big tough football teams we've come to expect at LSU. all in all i think he is the perfect fit.

recruiting is not that tough. Guys that don't know how to teach anything on a field or court are routinely national asst coach of the year because they are:
smooth talkers
highly organized
persistent
and can win the recruiting game.
I once went to a basketball coaching clinic where a college Asst Coach spoke about man to man defense and scheme specific drills they did in practice. HS coaches were literally stifling laughter because the guy was completely out of his depth and couldn't communicate even the simplest concepts. But he was good with the mamas and the aunts and the grandmaws.

While Del Rio has the potential to be great at recruiting and booster relations, the issue is because he has never coached in college in any capacity, he doesn't know himself whether or not he would like and want to do it. Yes, he is a high rewards guy, but he is also a high risk guy who could do some serious unintentional damage to the program if it turns out he doesn't like it and bolts early. Kind of like Saban and the pros in reverse, but he can do more damage with high school relations and booster cohesion. I wouldn't object to his hiring some day, but it should be done with eyes open.

So average in the NFL equates to average in college and great at Boise beating up on Bowling Green would parlay over into SEC dominance. Got it. Makes sense. Who wants the next Pete Carroll when you can have the next Dan Hawkins!!

Yeah call a 90 year old with 3 years of HC experience at NC State. 16-17 at NC State is definitely tougher than keeping an NFL job for 7-8 years because you already told us how Vandy and ULL are better than the Cleveland Browns and St. Louis Rams. You are all knowing.

JDR's recruiting pitch-
"Son you know you remind me of (insert which ever is more applicable- Ray Lewis, Julius Peppers, MJD, Fred Taylor, Sims-Walker). When I coached him this is how we used him (insert fluff). We would try to use you the same way. If you come to LSU, I'd love to help you become that type of player."
Of course the rant thinks recruiting is rocket science and talking to an 18 year old and their grand maw is something on the Hat, Coach O and Tropper Taylor can do.

Answer the question. What will make JDR "the next Pete Carroll"? Just because he is an NFL coach that might come to LSU? What separates him from the rest of the flock out there? His record as HC is mediocre. His last two years have been awful. He barely kept his job this year. Dazzle us with your brilliance.

You still think that NFL coaching is equal to NCAA and even Big Sky Conference coaching? You're so cute.

the majority of the actual recruiting process for most programs is handled by people you never even heard of or don't think about. There isn't enough hours in the day for LM or even GC and JC to be continually involved in the ongoing process unless it is a high profile/must have kid.

recruiting is merely a nuisance an NFL guy may or may not want to deal with. Not some skill he'd need to develop
