I always found it dubious that Red McCombs (mega-UT donor) would utter these words immediately following the hiring of Charlie Strong:

quote:

"I think the whole thing is a bit sideways," McCombs said of the selection process during an interview with ESPN 1250 San Antonio. "I don't have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator.

"But I don't believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don't think it adds up."

McCombs, the former owner of the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Vikings and co-founder of Clear Channel Communications, said on "The Blitz with Dat Nguyen and Jason Minnix" that he was stunned to learn Strong was the choice to replace Mack Brown.

He publicly lobbied last week for Texas to hire former NFL coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden.

"I think it is a kick in the face," McCombs said. "Beyond the fact of what actually happened. We have boosters that have a lot of knowledge about the game. When we decided to go get Mack -- from the time we decided to go get Mack to about 30 hours later to have a press conference here and it was done -- we had a lot of input before we went after him.

"So I don't know what the big rush was. I was kind of pleased that [Texas athletic director Steve] Patterson already said that he'd like to get it done in the middle of January. That seemed logical to me. I'm a team player, but I think they went about it wrong and made the selection wrong."

Texas named its McCombs School of Business after the benefactor, and he has a statue inside Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. McCombs has donated more than $100 million to UT and is a close friend to Brown.

Now with UT about to fire Strong and presumably hire Tom Herman, it begs the question: How would Red McCombs feel about UT hiring Tom Herman? If you look at the resumes of the two coaches, they are awfully similar...each had success as coordinators at major schools, with both winning national titles in those capacities. Further, Strong's last two seasons at Louisville saw him go 23-3, with bowl wins over Florida and Miami (FL).

On paper, do you objectively see much difference between Herman and Strong (per-UT)?

This thread isn't meant to be a knock on Herman, or to promote Strong...I just feel that Strong was sabotaged from the beginning by influential donor(s) and made the difficult job even more difficult. I will be curious to see how McCombs feels about a potential Herman hire.

I said this in a thread last night and was told by a texas fan that I know nothing.

Everyone could see that they set him up to fail, but they were too arrogant to accept it. Makes you wonder why he was even offered the job.

Yeah there's a good chance Herman could fall flat especially with the roster on Texas now

McCombs actually went on to apologize to Strong for the position coach comment. If I was Herman, I'd go somewhere where you don't have boosters breathing down your neck from Day 1. I guess if he is the control freak that some say he is, then the boosters may not be too much of an issue for him.

Herman has beaten far more ranked teams over two seasons

Much more impressive and win his bowl game

He was also more impressive as a coordinator against great D

You may be right but I was just asking myself how long it would take for that comment.

Well, if you want to bring race into the issue, would Strong have even coached this season if he was white? And, was Strong hired just because he is black, almost because A&M brought in a black coach? Think about it...

resume's are similar, but Herman's grasp on football is top notch.

Wasn't Strong like the 5th choice for TX? i think that says enough

I think a lot of UT fans feel differently about the program now vs. 3 years ago. The top up and coming young HC seems like a win now because of the last several years.

In other words, Strong on paper wasn't a bad hire...quite the contrary. And, Herman, on paper, is a great hire. The error in the UT though process was back then. The "We should be able to steal whatever guy we want" was unreasonable. Their expectations are much more aligned with reality this time around.

Lol.

McCombs is a billionaire but essentially an old white redneck.

At the time of the hire, McCombs's biggest problem was that Strong was CWB--Coaching While Black.

i think red didn't get his way and was pouting about it. plain and simple.

strong sabotaged himself by not going out and getting better coaches.

teddy bridgewater would be the x-factor in all this.

The same donors who ponied up for an $850,000 per year, three-year guaranteed contract for a glorified high-school offensive coordinator after the school president and athletics director flew to Tulsa to beg him to take said sweetheart deal?

Yes Strong would have coached if he were white, hispanic, Arab, native american, asian, Martian, or Plutonian. It was only his 3rd year.

They (most boosters and fans) never wanted Strong, and wanted him gone as soon as year one was over. That man never stood a chance as he had to fight everyone from boosters to fans to media, to undisciplined and diva talent from the Mack era.

McCombs and company honestly thought they were about to swoop in and hire Nick Saban away from Alabama. They were going to be against whoever Texas got after that, because they weren't Saban.

Strong did himself in with a weak staff and CWB was something he couldn't overcome with the "enlightened" in Austin

He was 12-3 in his last 2 years at Louisville, And was an extremely successfull Coordinator at Florida. He was a top 3 name that year.
