Can Someone Explain Why Tennessee Wants Tee Martin So Badly?

I don’t get it.
I know he was a Vol QB back in the 90s and he may be a swell guy. But he is green as hell. He’s a guy in his 30s who had never been anything more than a WR coach at places like Kentucky and New Mexico until just two years ago. I know he’s been USC OC for past two years but I just don’t get how he is worth fighting for and people like Doeren and Schiano make people want to take a flamethrower to Neyland.

Don't think he was in the top 5 or top 10 of any serious lists by Vols fans prior to the past weekend.
If Tenn has to end up with Tee Martin as HC then even more stuff has gone wrong. Just don't see it. Would be plain stupid not to hire Miles before settling on Tee Martin or a lot of other coaches out there.

Pretty much. Tee might not think he's ready either, and he might have already let them know. At this stage of the game though, he could have his school pride invoked as a reason to come (see Mike Shula at Alabama) and take the job. Rumors persist that Peyton Manning is not in his corner though, and offending him is a non-starter in Knoxville.

Same reason they wanted a bad NFL coach that hasn’t coached in years as their HC.

It reminds me of when Alabama hired Mike Shula. He was a QB coach with a paper thin coaching resume but he played QB for the bear so he was acceptable. A classic “one of us” hire, nothing more.

Like I said in the other thread... Fans know he is green but he is Tennessee and they want to rally around that. Former players from his era to the Butch Jones era are lining up for him...all hoping that he will get the resources to hire a top shelf staff until he gets his legs under him. I personally think it will be a train wreck but what do I know. Like I said before, word on the street is that Manning is against this so I don't think Currie goes there if true.

So it’s a classic “at this point, he’s the only one that can rally the fan base” decision.
I know that but I still don’t get it. Why wouldn’t the fan base rally around the best available coach? At this point, I think it’s fair to say that Doeren is a better HC than Martin. But Vol fans were ready to set dynamite if he was hired.

There just doesn’t seem to be any logic whatsoever. Like it’s all based on pure, raw emotion.

In Bama's defense, the NCAA sanctions and the Mike Price debacle had them cornered at the time.
Not saying Tee would be as disastrous, but it reminds me more of a Jon Embree situation at CU.

Because the fan base wants to win the press conference, not actual games. It's a legacy that started when Dooley busted out the orange pants.

Personally, I don't either. I'd take him as and OC and Recruiting Coordinator though. He's not ready for a HC gig in the SEC. Needs some seasoning at a smaller school if that's the route he wants to go, either that or more time as an OC first. The fans are bringing up his name b/c all the former players are.
There have been rumors of a Kiffin(HC), Tee(OC), and Steele(DC) staff that were proposed and shot down by someone in the admin. I think that propelled a lot of the fan stuff. If the Sumlin thing sticks and he's our next coach, I wouldn't mind seeing Tee as his OC.
Doeren was basically Butch Jones pt. 2...
