If Kelvin is hired I would immediately temper my expectations of the program. I wouldn’t expect to make a playoffs for at least a few years. It’s a high risk low reward type hire.

It absolutely did. But being UGA alum sealed the deal. It’s disingenuous to not acknowledge that “one of us” doesn’t matter: it absolutely does… sometimes it works (harbaugh/smart), sometimes it doesn’t (frost)

I would be curious if Georgia or Michigan hired Harbaugh and Smart with Kelvin’s very flimsy resume? He has coached not 5 years yet and hasn’t even been a coordinator for an entire year.

I’d love Kelvin Sheppard. One of my all time favorite players. Would be a fun hire.

Risky, sure… but I’m good with risking it on a young guy that wants LSU to succeed. Especially one that Dan Campbell (best coach in football) backs.

It's not just that he doesn't have head coaching experience he doesn't have coaching experience in general

If LSU is hiring a new coach in 5 years and he continues to do great then sure I'd love to give him a shot but you just can't do that yet

Totally get your point, and you are right, but Georgia would have a different HC right now with that same thinking.

If Kirby Smart played at Cal, 0% chance he’d be Georgia’s HC right now replacing Richt.
I don't get why people keep bringing up Kirby Smart here

He was an elite DC for almost a decade under one of the greatest coaches of all time. He proved himself long term that he had what it takes to be successful

I love how every cycle, some dumbass Pomnasky arises and tries to sell a disjointed fanbase on someone who has no experience.

You people who want him have lost the plot. Sure he could be an excellent coach in the making but with HC experience there is a 100% certainty he will not be hired. They can’t afford to frick this search up

How much did all that experience help Brian Kelly?

I know he doesn’t have much experience, but that doesn’t matter. Plenty of NFL coaches today are directly hired from coordinator positions. He’s young and extremely likable and the players and recruits will love him. CFB has changed rapidly with NIL and is becoming more like the NFL anyways.

This sounds pretty much like what Ole Miss fans were saying about that energetic rah-rah USC DL coach Edward James Orgeron Jr who they wanted as HC.

CEO admits he took his lumps & was too inexperienced as a first time boss, despite giving 100% of his energy. It takes more than speeches & fire. It was 14 years later that Coach O could effectively lead a vast organization to a championship.

There’s a difference between no head coaching experience and a guy who’s only coached 7 games as a DC. We don’t really know if he’s even a good DC at this point frankly. Certainly looks promising but if say Courtney Upshaw had the same resume people would laugh at the suggestion LSU hire him.

Call me crazy, but I don’t think LSU is going to hire a guy who started coaching 4 years ago and has only been a DC in the NFL for less than a full season to be their next head coach.

It could happen. Wouldn’t melt. But i also think it would be widely criticized by LSU fans at the moment of the hire.

The fans are going to criticize any hire that woody makes. Saban too expensive/old would be the criticism for that one.

This needs to be left out of consideration. The only name the fans will accept is Kiffin. We shouldn't be trying to win the press conference here. Dan Lanning Marcus Freeman and Mike Elko weren't on anyone's radar when we picked Brian fricking Kelly. This fanbase thinks it's too good to hire a coordinator or HC from a smaller school. Instead they want the safe low risk, low reward type play for whatever reason.

Regarding Sheppard, I'd have to see his plan for how he's going to build out his staff before deciding if I like it. But it does have the most upside

It's not even close to the same thing. The whole appeal with Shep is that since he played here there's a chance that, if successful, he never leaves similar to Kirby Smart. You can't just throw away the fact that he played here as irrelevant. It's the factor that gives him all his upside
