That'd be a slap in the face. He's not leaving a Super Bowl contender to take the same job at LSU.

I'd be pissed if LSU disrespected him like that.

I'm saying I want a long term candidate, not someone we're going to have to replace in a year or 2. But yeah, run with your cherry-picked response

No head coach experience
this such a tired narrative. The 3 top coaches in college football currently were never head coaches before they got hired.

What has Kelvin done as a HC in college football while juggling recruiting and NIL?
Absolutely nothing. He hasn't been a HC and doesn't have enough experience in coaching period to even be mentioned in the same breath as LSU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. He's only being mentioned because he played at LSU and meets the "College Rooney Rule Minority Quota Interbiew" BS. (Yeah, I know there's no actual College Rooney Rule, but yall know what I'm saying) This job is too big for anybody that doesn't have extensive and proven Head Coach experience.

Shep went from director of player personnel at LSU in 2020 to NFL defensive coordinator in five years?!?!?!

Talk about a rise. Think about what he can do as a head coach on that time

Yeah, and how did those with head coaching experience do for us overall in the last 10 years. 1 NC and numerous 3-4 losses seasons.

Not knighting for Shepherd, but this apprehension about hiring pro coaches needs to stop. Saban started off in the Pro ranks (Houston and Cleveland)....Pete Carroll went from pros to college and back. Harbaugh went from college to pro to college and back to pro and has been very successful... .Hell even June Jones had success at Hawaii. Of course, one could mention Herm Edwards

Except your response is making that assumption that he'll jump. He's an LSU alum, loves the school, and LSU can make him one of the top 5 paid college head coaches in the nation if he's successful.

Being scared of success is bitch made. Worst-case scenario (in your scenario, he's successful), he wins us some big games, maybe even a championship, and we go out and get a new coach with no buyout. The horror!

But their entire career leading up to HC was working in successful programs. Sheppard has had a cup of coffee as an NFL coordinator who ultimately just has to coach football. There is a ton more that goes into a college HC, which is why the last 2 coaches we had were fired.

Exactly right. These morons want it both ways.

First they scream “DERP!! Dat big contract! Woodward bad!! We need an up and coming coach!”

THEN they scream “GASP!! No head coaching experience!”

I think these idiots think we are going to sign Nick Saban to a one-million a year incentive-based contract.

I don’t think we need to worry about Sheppard anyway. NFL GM’s are slavering over him. He fits the McVay pattern of a young up and coming coordinator. He will be an NFL head coach in January 2026.

Ask yourself, "would I know who the Detroit Lions DC is if he didn't play for LSU?" If the answer is no, then stop trying to suggest we hire him to be our head coach.

But he's not a random DC. He has arguably the best defense in the NFL and is getting recognition from all over due to his young age and fast rise. He was also featured on Hard Knocks. Plenty of non-LSU fans know who he is.

He does not. Not even close. Detroit is middle of the pack in scoring defense (11th).

Umm, the last two coaches DIDNT coach football and that's why they were fired. You have Austin Thomas and a whole admin team to handle a lot of the backend work. Give Sheppard the reigns on the cheap, hire an elite OC and let them cook. LSU needs a head coach that can lock down and own one side of the ball. Im tired of this CEO shite, they can't fix problems when they arise.

NFL Defensive Stats

#2 in EPA/PLAY

Much better stat than simply looking at scoring defense.

Sheppard has 4 seasons as an NFL position coach and half of a season as a DC.

Ryan Day and Dan Lanning both had 10+ years of college coaching experience before becoming HCs.

This would be a good hire. Are we going to act like Kirby Smart had a bunch of head coaching experience?

To be fair, neither of those guys had a playing career like Sheppard. That playing experience is worth something as well. We can't pretend like Kelvin Sheppard is just now starting his football career. Just a different path.
