LSU has more potential as a program, Alabama has more history. Both are top-5 programs year in and year out

Both pay well

The last thing LSU would want to do is get in a bidding war with Alabama.

Alabama is the best job in the SEC and it's not even close.

I think the vast majority of reasonable people would say LSU is a top 10 job. Alabama the same. How you rank them after that depends on the person but ultimately that's pretty much the definition of comparable.

yeah, to me there are three standout jobs in:

1) Texas
2) Southern Cal
3) Florida

Then there are some great programs that thrive under the right coach, some with great traditions, some with great recruiting advantages, some with money, etc

LSU's only closely comparable program is probably tOSU - another major state school in a talent rich state with no major in state competition. That doesn't mean those two schools are better jobs than everyone not named Texas, USC, and Florida - but it does mean they have special opportunities to succeed that few other programs can claim because Tulane isn't going to rise from the grave and start competing within the state.

We can argue about programs like UGA, FSU, A&M, Alabama, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Oregon, Michigan, Auburn etc but there's a place for LSU on that list and that's pretty comfortable turf to stand on (and for our coach to consume).

The Saban to Texas story is fascinating for another reason as well. The last 24 plus months have been terrible for the Big 12 as a whole and for Texas in particular. Their long time little brother program broke free and gained independence and respect in the best conference in the country. Saban going to Texas would blunt a lot of that momentum and turn most in state eyes back to Austin as perhaps only he (of all the college coaches in the country) could.

You have some valid points. Texas A&M is changing some of that as well as Bama raiding the state of La.

Bama is obviously a well oiled machine right now, but I feel they are more susceptible to an avg hire really hurting them.

I don't care who you are, a crappy coach is a crappy coach.

LSU job is greater in terms of quality of life

Bama job is greater in terms of prestige

Well the same coach bolted from both so I'd say they're about equal.

I bet he'll end up regretting one more than the other, though.
