I think Mason would have been a good hire last year, before we started primarily recruiting for a 4-3. It makes no sense that O would hire a 3-4 guy when he’s been on record stating that he wants a 4-3. If he hires Mason, I’d support, but not necessarily understand it.

Agreed. I have no idea what makes people think Corey Raymond would be a great hire at DC.

Have you never heard of Northwestern I can tell you vandy is just as hard to get into.
But the difference is
I didn’t realize northwestern plays
Georgia Alabama Florida and the rest of the Sec. Do you really think they would have made the big ten title game in a normal year where COVID doesn’t exist! Wow must be nice to play 5 games and those games be the bottom dwellers of the big ten

The question is: how much of the Vandy defense was talent and how much Mason?

The one year that he acted as their DC, they were the 28 rated D nationally as a 4 win SEC team with Vandy talent. As for the rest of the time that their D trended downward, it’s hard to say how large his role was.

I think it’s also worth noting that Mason didn’t recruit nearly as well as Franklin at Vandy, but no one else has either. But he was working with less talent at the end of his stint than at the beginning. I don’t think that prevents hiring him here, as Aranda didn’t give a damn about recruiting. However, it also doesn’t work in Mason’s favor.

He last was dc in 2012-13. Thing of how the offenses have changed since then. That is the biggest strike against him

He was Vandy’s acting DC in 2015. Again, they had a solid defense that year. The article linked below also points out that Mason cut his teeth defending the spread vs Oregon. He also faced some pretty good Washington offenses, as well. I know they have evolved, but damn. Do a little research. It’s not like he’s ever seen them before.

Mason isn’t my first choice, but all this melting is based purely on bad analogies and binary thinking.

They are as bad of programs as Vandy... and yet their defensive minded head coach put them in position to succeed.

The only schools in the FBS that give less of a shite about big-time athletics than Vandy are Tulane and Temple. They are just cashing the SEC checks and pocketing the cash. They make no investments in their facilities or programs other than baseball. Just look at their 100 year old basketball area and tiny, beyond shitty football stadium. Franklin is the only coach who’s succeeded there for a reason.

Mason wouldn't be my #1 choice, but to say he isn't a good candidate and shouldn't be thought about is delusional.

Find me sufficient evidence on his resume that he can defend Bama and Florida as a DC in modern SEC offensive era (last 5 years) You can't. Hard pass

Now go find a P5 DC not named Brent Veneables who has done it?

You can’t. Not even the Cinn DC who is my first choice has that resume.

Mason’s interested in LSU. Great for a fall back option. Now let’s go after a splash hire.

people were acting like he sat better kickers so Sarah could play. Its fricking Vandy, they dont have a better anything anywhere, its a miracle they even had Sarah.

Well, if you cared anything for the truth, Vandy did have a better kicker than Sarah, and he even played in the same game. Their punter had something like 7 punts for an average of almost 50 yards. The punter can kickoff better than Sarah. She was just used as a gimmick.
