I personally don’t think his style is conducive to being a successful head coach. Ultra aggressive defensive coordinator doesn’t work more than it does at both the college level

Does he really want to take his "big shot" at Memphis or Tulane and not wait a couple years for South Carolina, Kentucky, Ole Miss, etc.?

You’re MUCH more likely to get a shot at a job like Florida or Auburn or Penn st or Oregon from Tulane or Memphis than Kentucky or South Carolina. You can win at Tulane, you can’t win at Kentucky

Even though I don’t agree with you, this makes way more sense than saying ‘I dOnT tHiNK hE’d Be a GoOd cOaCh bEcAuSe He’S ToO NiCe’

How the heck do you even surmise that without being around that person in a day to day setting

If you think he’s cute, just say you think he’s cute (not talking to you mingo)

He's a fun uncle kind of guy, not a complete a-hole, which is pretty much what it takes to be successful at the highest level of this sport.

Blake owes it to himself to at least take these requested head coaching position interviews. Just because he goes and interviews for the head coaching job at another school does not means he is not satisfied as being the DC at LSU.

I tell my sin all the time who is very satisfied with his current job that he owes it to himself to listen when another opportunity presents itself. You don't have to take the job offer but you need to listen to what is being offered for yourself and family.

Blake Baker would be a fool if he did not interview for tge head coaching position. Especially the one that is opened up in New Orleans his Alma Matta Tulane.

Lane Kiffen would tell him the same.

Memphis and Tulane are by far the best non power schools to coach at right now

They are basically auto spring boards into a big job. They have so many advantages over their opponents

Interviewing for those two jobs doesn’t mean “he wants to leave lsu”. Any coordinator would be an idiot not taking those jobs if possible

my concern is he'd be mentally checked out.

He wants to be a HC, why would this be a concern? Completely in his best interest to continue to perform well as LSU’s DC if that’s how the chips fall.

Well shite, looks like we're going to lose him one way or another. He obviously doesn't want to be at LSU anymore so even if he doesn't land a HC job anywhere, my concern is he'd be mentally checked out.

You've been chicken little'ing for weeks.

if he's actively interviewing for other positions, time to move on...

And if they don't hire him he will want a DC job somewhere. Why force him out if you don't have to? Because he's doing what just about every coach has done in their careers, exploring potential options to advance in their profession.

but this one seems like he's the one reaching out

The last three HC's at Memphis all ended up being hired by power conf. schools (Fuentes - Va Tech, Norvell - FSU, Silverfield - Arkansas). On that basis alone it is arguably one of the best non-P4 jobs.

Some of yall act like jilted girlfriends. You WANT coordinators who are good enough to be considered for head coaching positions. Would you prefer to bring back Joe Sloan? I'm pretty sure he would be dedicated to LSU given no schools want to consider him for their head coaching jobs.

But coordinators get better jobs than Memphis as their first HC gig all the time, surely he could get a better job offer next year at a power conference school if the defense has a good showing. And Baker made about the same money (slightly more actually) as LSU's DC than Silverfield made as the Memphis HC.

The last 3 coaches at Memphis landed the VA Tech, FSU and Arkansas jobs. It’s a pretty fricking good launching pad. That coach also has more resources and talent than all but maybe 2-3 teams on the schedule every season. That’s a good way to learn to be a HC.

USF is in that group. North Texas is at the doorstep.

so did the last 2 Tulane Head Coaches.

so between the 2 schools that's the last 5 head coaches combined that all used those schools to get a bigger better job.

Getting a HC job is clearly a goal for him. My counter to him jumping now is:

LSU is countering hard to keep him and in the last 6 years he's coached:
Miami
LSU
Mizzou
LSU

I'm not sure he would want to move again in 2 years. Tulane isn't that big based on distance, but it's still a job change. He could potentially stay at LSU and have success with Lane and get a shot at a P4 job in a few years.

success as a coordinator is a lot less likely to get him a top tier Power 4 job than success as a HC at a Group of 5 job.

Here is Athlon’s ranking of the top job openings this year
Athlon Sports

1. LSU - hired a P4 head coach
2. Florida - hired a G5 head coach
3. Penn State - still open
4. Auburn - hired a G5 head coach
5. Arkansas - hired a G5 head coach
6. Va Tech - hired a P4 head coach
7. UCLA - looking like Chesney a G5 head coach
8. Oklahoma State - hired a G5 head coach
9. Stanford - hired an NFL assistant (Stanford Alum)
10. Cal - hired a Coordinator
12 Oregon State - hired an assistant

note: since that article was written Ole Miss, Kentucky, and Michigan State all came open and hired coaches

Ole Miss - promoted from within
Mich State - hired a former P4 coach
Kentucky - Kentucky hired a coordinator

so of 14 Power4 openings this cycle:

the top 7 (that have already made a hire) went with either a P4 or G5 coach.
1 more is going to hire a G5 guy (Chesney to UCLA isn’t official yet i don’t think)
1 went to an NFL assistant (that is alumni of the school that hired him)
1 promoted from within (Golding wasn’t getting a HC gig anywhere other than Ole Miss)
only 3 hired a college assistant from outside their own program.

Note 2: Memphis, Tulane, and USF were not open at time, so no clue where they would rank on a list like this.
