I think it’s Dabo or James Franklin

All sports are copycat leagues. You can bet that Auburn is looking at the success LSU's and USC's new coaches are having, and would like to try to go that route with this hire. That route being paying a ton to a HC at another P5 program with a record of established success. Kelly and Riley each had multiple playoff appearances at ND and OU.

For LSU and USC the pitch to Kelly and Riley (aside from the massive amounts of money) was that those schools offered each coach an opportunity it appears wasn't achievable at their current schools...winning a national championship. Both ND and OU were good enough to make the CFP. However, they were generally dominated (often by SEC programs) when they got there.

There aren't a lot of HCs who fit that mold for Auburn. The most notable one that does is Dabo. He doesn't seem to have any reason to want to leave Clemson to jump into the SEC meat grinder. And he has won NCs at Clemson. But are the natives at Clemson becoming unappreciative? Does the big money coming into the SEC soon widen the gap between the SEC and ACC? Maybe. Still, it is hard to see an Alabama alum leaving a good situation to become the HC at Auburn of all places.

Franklin maybe fits the mold to a lesser extent. He has had success at Penn St. He knows the SEC from his time at Vandy. Perhaps he feels he has capped his level of success at PSU and needs to go to a place where he can truly compete for championships. On the one hand the argument is if he can't get to the playoffs in the Big 10, how is he going to do it through the SEC West. Then again, Auburn fought through the gauntlet in 2010 and 2013, and almost did so again in 2017. If you think the Saban-era at Alabama is in its twilight, now might be the time to jump.

The wildcard is Urban Meyer. He's had as much success as anyone not named Saban over the last 20 years. But he burned out twice at two different championship level programs and just got chased out of town quickly in the NFL. Does he have the heart to get back into the 365 grind to compete in the SEC?

Who do you want? Dabo or Franklin would be great hires.

Franklin just a terrible coach.

Sylvester Croom was a terrible coach. Franklin is an above average coach.

James Franklin aside from making better in-game adjustments is doing well. He has PSU stocked with young talent. And, that Manny Diaz hire was a good hire.

19-13 the last 3 years isn't really doing well at Penn State. Only one bowl win, over Memphis, the past 5 years.

I cannot wait to see the coach that meets or exceeds all 75 billions points of criteria the new AD has. IMHO that is worse than the binder Ed Ogreron had.

Can Penn State afford the bad PR of losing their 'winning' black local-guy coach to a (shudder) SEC school?

Where is Urban Meyer this fall?
