No way they go with Steele. Someone at Auburn is putting that out there to distract from their real target
I believe it’s also a move to set fan expectations low and create energy with the new hire. If the fans think Steele, practically any hire they make (other than Steele) will make the fans happy.

Part of me thinks this is smoke for Freeze.

If you think about the timing and logistics, Steele makes some sense:
1. Firing right before NSD could lead you to believe your next coach is already in the building.
2. The money situation w/ Malzhan's buyout would be more manageable with Steele as compared to other candidates.
3. GOB Networks love the idea of continuity and keeping players/assistants/recruits, something Steele would do. It appears the GOB Network will be a factor for Auburn here.
4. The 2021 one-time transfer rule will likely happen, and keeping kids happy will be paramount this offseason. Auburn's roster on paper is loaded for 2021, so keeping players on board is likely crucial if Auburn is eyeing the SEC West crown next year.

I am praying this is it. Or smoke for someone else. We've seen this kind of thing before. You know there could be some hang ups with folks accepting the choice for new coach so you dangle out the worst possible hire as a rumor first and then everyone is beyond relieved when the true hire is announced.
Fingers crossed.
If it is Steele, I will say that it will be a decision that is talked about years from now as to what killed Auburn Football. It is the worst of all choices. Keeping Gus would have been better and that would have been terrible as well.

This year newly hired HCs salary were not all good. Leach's salary is 5M with no buyout for a 2-7 record so far. Drinkwitz's salary is 5M with 14M buyout for a 5-4 record so far. Kiffin's salary is 3.9M with no buyout for a 4-5 record so far. Pittman's salary 3M with no buyout for a 3-6 record so far.
The link is for all HCs salary for 202o.

I just read the auburn board on 247 this is what I got
1. 75+ percent that it is Kevin Steele
2. All of the big boosters are pushing Steele
3. The AD did not want to make the change
4. Gus apparently was a control freak and really paranoid causing a pretty bad culture
5.these big boosters were shooting for Kevin Steele to take his job 2 years ago. This leads me to two conclusion... Kevin Steele got real close with the money. I don’t know if it is to sabotage Gus or to just have friends in high places.
6. A lot of the fans believe Steele went behind the back of the previous head coachs back, however this is just speculation.
Also, the two names after Steele are sark and cristobal. The mod did say there is a high probability it is Steele tho

based on all this information I can only draw one conclusion
it won't be Steele

Auburn doesn't have insiders. The only ones who know anything are the ones writing checks.
