You got your attention with the "i forgive them" post. No need to stir the pot further.

Jesus Christ man, that's not what he said.

From what I've read, which is admittedly not a lot, some girls when to Briles and told him that they were raped/sexually assaulted by football players and Briles told them to go to the police (which is looks like they did). I can't say I would have reacted much differently in that situation, other than following up and making sure it was actually reported. I'm not sure why the victims would think to go to the football coach first. If one of these girls were my daughter my first call would be to the police, not the football coach.

Umm no. But human tendency is you back the ones you love blindly until it can be proven otherwise. If my daughter was raped, I damn sure am not going to A FOOTBALL COACH about it....
And if I'm told my son committed rape, I'll be expecting much more than someones word before I take him to the police of my own accord....

Briles is supposedly an incredible offensive genius in the film room. Would he also be in the booth as an OC? The OC mentors the QBs. How does LSU create a "handler" method that supervises the same to which parents of would-be QB recruits are comfortable with their son's spending lots of one-on-one time with this OC? I'm not saying it couldn't [nor shouldn't] be attempted or done.

The following is quoted out of a Newsweek Article I found when Googling the transgressions of Art Briles:

"Briles took the program to these heights thanks to an unorthodox spread offense that led the nation in scoring each of the past three seasons. The Bears went 50-15 over the past five years, due primarily to the fact that his is (or was) the most progressive offensive mind in college football. When it came to issues that arose outside the film room, though—matters that directly impacted both his program and the welfare of Baylor’s students—the Pepper Hamilton report reveals him to have been a troglodyte."

LINK

Certainly there was lack of institutional control going on with Briles and likely too great of desire to win when choices are ultimately made that may work against the continued participation of players breaking rules. He likely was the polar opposite of Les Miles on reacting to team rules infractions.

What I wonder, however, is how such circumstances are dealt with at a level below the head coach? Has Briles learned from his mistakes to the point where he will be an open book on anything and everything he sees of his players to a fault?

I guess I'd give the guy an interview if I was in charge and would want to see what he has in his Binder to overcome his transgressions from repeating themselves in an OC role.

To make my point further....
in college my buddy hooked up with a girl and they had sex bc they were BOTH drunk. And the next few days the girl was so embarrassed that it was known that they had had sex, she threw out the rape word a couple of times to her close friends and it got around. Thankfully her friend told her that she had been pretty much egging it on that night and that 'rape' was a serious allegation and that she thought this girl should just let it lie, its not the end of the world and she really wasnt raped by any and all accounts.

So....should everyone have immediately reported my friend to the police at the first mention of this 'rape'.......can you imagine?????

I'm reading it. I'm saying Briles shouldnt have been put in position to do what they wanted him to do. Unless he was presented the full docket before the police were (which is impossible) then youre asking him to be judge & jury with zero proof.

It's his job to report it to police. That's the rules. No one is asking him to kick the guy off the team or say he is guilty. He AND his staff should've reported it to the proper authorities and they didnt. Simple as that.

quote:

He ultimately made the wrong call, but it cant be held against him for forever. He wasnt there and hes being asked to turn on his kids with no proof. You sit behind your computer screen all righteous but youre not understanding the position he was put in.

Yeah actually it could and likely will be held against him for forever. He's not turning on anyone. He's reporting a possibile sexual assault to the authorities. If you expect me to feel sorry for Art Briles mishandling a situation involving his players sexually assaulting people then you are sadly mistaken.

quote:

Previously unreported details of the Baylor University sexual assault scandal involving the school’s football players were revealed in a Wall Street Journal report published on Friday.

The report was compiled from interviews with Baylor University regents who indicated that the scope of the scandal “involved 17 women who reported sexual or domestic assaults involving 19 players, including four alleged gang rapes, since 2011.”

Following an investigation by Philadelphia law firm Pepper Hamilton, Baylor fired football coach Art Briles in May. In at least one case, according to the regents, Briles knew about an alleged incident and did not alert police, the school’s judicial affairs staff or the Title IX office responsible for reacting to such cases.

Yeah poor innocent Art. Not reporting things to authorities, judicial affairs, and the title ix office. Boo hoo for him. He's so innocent.

IMO, the real story is this involved police, admin, football, and player cover ups. All of them are guilty, but Art will receive most of the blame. While that may not be fair, it doesn't change the facts that he was involved in all of this, and knowingly made little to no effort to report these things to the proper authorities not just the police.

If the VICTIM makes an allegation to any authority figure on campus it is that person's responsibility to report it to the proper outlets. That was not done. End of story.

Essentially, what he is asking for is Duke lacrosse all over again.

It's unfortunate, but fake rape allegations have cause people to be skeptical, and have taught people to wait until an investigation is complete to take any action/pass judgment.

I don't think Briles should have immediately assumed these girls were lying, but I also don't think that he has any obligation to take any action other than making sure the claim is known to the police (either reporting it himself or instructing the accuser to do so) before a full investigation is conducted.

Well youre mad he didnt report it. Ok.

As stated above there's numerous reasons why I might be hesitant as well, so I wont throw too many stones in his direction. Again, asking him to betray a kid he probably cares about with no proof is not an easy ask. I dang sure wouldnt do it to my son.

Im not saying he didnt err, just saying I understand why he did.

Youre ruining a persons life over nothing in some instances. Other instances, your doing whats right.

Briles chose wrong.

So, is this the main rub with Art Briles? He had knowledge of an alleged assault and told the victim to go to the police instead of reporting it himself? I find it odd that she went to the coach before the police...has the reasoning for this been explained?

I forgot it's the victim and parents faults here. That's your terrible opinion on the matter.

Well in this case you wouldn't have to hand him over as the men have already been arrested and jailed. This is just sad. No one is asking you to turn in your son as guilty, but you're saying briles shouldn't have even had to report the matters to the proper authorities and had his players speak with police to clear it up. Pretty sad.

Seems to be chicken. The rest is sensationalism from the media, and people are really easily led.

alleged assault

People have already been CONVICTED in some cases. The jury found them guilty. Period.

And no this is not the rub. The rub is he was too dumb (best case scenario) to report the misconduct to the proper outlets.

When approached did he tell the victims to report it to authorities??? That would've been my response as well. If you think that makes me an awful person so be it, but as I've stated, I've personally seen a false allegation and thankfully avoided it being public.
Briles was put in a terrible position bc 'typical protocol' wasnt followed. And hes paid the price. You seem to want to insist that makes him a criminal, he was fired bc the university basically needed a scape goat. Reporting it to authorities, which most all in this thread say makes the most sense except you, couldve been a whole different story.

But they weren't at the time. Hindsight is always 20/20. No coach can babysit players 24/7.

Yeah the word for word fact finding by an independent law firm reviewing the mishandling of the allegations is sensationalism. Please, since i am so mislead, tell me what happened in the case per the fact finding study.

The one that doesn't let his players rape girls, and then cover up for them.
