He looks to be elite when it comes to coaching Dline and stopping the run

Arguments against
I'm nervous about his inexperience with managing an entire defense that includes the secondary.
Especially coming off a season in which were dead last (aka 127th out of 127 teams) in passing defense.

This is leap-of-faith 2.0. Like Pelini, you have to lean on baseless projections.
saying that hiring a guy who hadn't been a DC or even a successful HC in many years is the same as hiring a guy who is currently doing great work in the NFL is laughable.
Do both involve some risk? Sure, but it's not even close to being a Pelini type hire.
ETA: Based on the available coaches left to hire who do you have at the top of the list, and where do you put Nielsen in your list?

Nelson has more experience calling a defense than Joe Brady had calling an offense...

For: we’re scrambling and need a DC who’s not a retread or a reject.

MLU please don’t post sensible posts in this thread . You will ruin the ignorance......

True. But that's not an argument to show confidence he can coordinate an entire synchronized defensive unit.

What about the fact he has already been a college DC before?

- PRO: He's probably not super-entrenched on a scheme. Which means he can utilize the players better based on what he has (very similar to what Peetz said). What system he prefers is definitely an interview point. But the answer they are looking for is probably along the lines of "against which team?".
- PRO: DL, like many position groups, have evolved in how they are used. It is no longer binary in the sense of "space eater" vs. "attack". He's most definitely experienced in that arena. But it bleeds over through the whole defense. For example, you want the right side penetrating and the left side eating blocks (both DT & DE) because of traits of the QB. That will determine what your LBs are doing or are responsible for, which will directly affect the S's, which means the DBs on one side vs. the other might be in zone (facing the QB) on the left side (since DL not penetrating) and loose man-man on the right. So someone with that modern whole-defense perspective rooted in the DL is a plus.
- CON: NFLers often have trouble in the meeting/film room. In the NFL your position group shows up when you say show up. In CFB one might skip the meeting, another has a test. You have to be more about planning your time and less demanding in CFB vs. the NFL. Otherwise you won't get your necessary film/analysis work done.
- NEUTRAL: recruiting. There's so much that goes into this and too many variables to say NFL can/can't recruit. You can't limit it to roots (only), geography (only), etc. etc.
- TBD CON: communication. I'm talking signals here. What works for him? Will that work for us? How many GA's does he need if on sideline or will a position group coach have to act as his signaler (potentially reducing sideline coaching for that group)? Will he be calling to position coaches and they signal their own position groups? In the end you have both limited communication means, literally, in CFB and less resources than the NFL. Will this be a big or small adjustment for him? And speed matters; this matters more than you might think at first. If you're like Kirby and have a package for every situation HUNH or just NH offenses cause you problems. So you either have to not do that, or be able to get your calls very very fast. One or the other.

He was the recruiting coordinator at NC State. I would think he can recruit and probably likes it.

The Rant doesn't hire LSU football coaches, only discusses their opinions on said hires.
Pump Nuts only have tolerance for opinions that are 100% Rosy Alice in Wonderland BS.........

We are taking a calculated risk. What's the upside? We overcome our nausea, fall deeply in love, babies, normalcy, no more self-loathing. Downside... we date Nielsen publicly and collapse in on ourselves like a dying star.

Pro - available now. Truthfully, I think he can be a fantastic hire. If he can generate a push from the line (simply by duplicating what he did at NC State) , imagine how much better C Raymond is gonna look.
Con - Ryan N is the only one who knows anything about his tendencies/opinions regarding in game adjustments.

The real question at this point is whether Nielsen is going to go be the DC for that dumpster fire of a NFL team the Detroit Lions, or be the DC for LSU and help us win national championships. On top of that who in their right mind would want to have to live in Detroit during the football season??
I keep reading rumors that he is heading to the Lions with Dan Campbell, hopefully that is not accurate information.

He is a positional coach that gives zero indication that he would transition successfully to DC.
He’s been a co-dc. Has experience at every level of football. You think he just stands there like a monkey with no input during game days? Does he not wear a headset and hear the calls going in and out during the game? Ya think he has no input whatsoever in the game plans?
If any of that I true, what’s the point in having assistant coaches outside the OC and DC?

It would be a blind hire in my opinion.
I assume They are going to talk.
But I think o really wants that Saints defense.
Get pressure with 4 is the way to go if you can do it.

For: The Saints pass rush is pretty good. NC State had good defenses during his time there. He attributed to that. Co Defensive Coordinator at a successful Mid Major, Northern ILL. DC at Central Conn. State. Successful team. Coaches with O for Ole Miss. * Everywhere he has been he has produced some pretty good d lines.
Against: Lack of top level competition as a DC. I mean he has had the chance to learn from some bright minds in NO..
We have done well with getting Saints coaches
It seems like O missed on freeman. How many times do you continue to miss. I assume that it is job to take.
