he's not a bad coach but it seems like a pretty terrible hire. he can't recruit at all.

He's a good coach, but won't be able to compete with LSU/Bama if he doesn't recruit well.

It's a decent hire, he did very well in the Big 10 while Ohio State and Michigan were down.

i like the hire. in the numerous "who would you hire if les was gone".. chryst/bielema were mentioned numerous times in the past few years.

that running scheme with LSU personnel

Chryst was mentioned as an OC option, but no one mentioned BB as a replacement man.

Ark needed either a great recruiter or Xs and Os master...it looks like they went 0-2.

I can't wait to hear him piss and moan about SEC recruiting. I'm guessing he'll be trying to turn schools in left and right.

I don't see this as a great hire. He was good, not great, at Whisky at a time when the Big 10 was not very good. I would have to say the 2012 campaign was uninspiring but I don't know enough about them to know a good reason why. He's walking into the toughest division of the toughest conference with a team that is in disarray and not built for a power running game and relying on defense. I think he needs at least 3 years to make over Arkansas into his image and begin being successful. But if he's not winning in 3 years, I believe he will be canned. Prediction: Arkansas will be looking for a new HC in 2015.

No, you narcissist.

There's tons of threads on this board congratulating Arky on getting Bielema.

Nope, Horrible hire, unless you like finishing 4th in your own division for years to come.

The hire just reeked of desperation. And I guess they were after everyone that was anyone told them to get stuffed. So they settled for This clown.

You never heard his name till he was hired you heard all the other names. why? because it was desperation. shite no one wants to coach us. Hey some guy at Wisconsin called, frick it hire him.

I suspect that within 3 years we will be having this search for arkansas next coach again..

We were so desperate that we resorted to hiring a coach from a BCS conference, headed to his third Rose Bowl in a row.

As far as recruiting goes, I see the fact that Bielema has had success without a bunch of 5 stars as a good thing. Arkansas doesn't have the in-state talent to pull top 10 classes every year. We need someone who can develop talent.

The knock on Bielema is that his teams were always good, but could never get over the hump. They always dropped a game in B10 play to another good team and usually came up with a clunker to go with it ending up 10-2.

I wouldn't be concerned with his recruiting ability. He will hire some assistants who know Texas and the SE like the back of their hand and will cut them lose on the trails, just happy if they put in 10-20 hours of opponent film study a week as a bonus.

Actually, you never heard this name because our AD doesn't let anything get out of the BAC.

Long said back in November that we would announce our hire in 10-14 days. 10 days later we announce Bielema. He may not have been our first choice, but I'm positive that he has been Long's guy for a long time.

The Petrino hiring came out of nowhere too. Was he also a desperation hire?

I don't think he's a bad coach and don't think that's why this is a strange hire for Arkansas. This just seems to have the makings of Rich Rod to Michigan. I don't know if Bielema is going to fit in the SEC; it's hard to tell. I think him taking lesser salary to hire a better staff is a major plus for you guys, depending on who they are, obviously.

I think it's a very good hire. The issue is how will he do recruiting wise, but you can see a strategy that might work. Texas is key and he should be able to add staff in that regard, but it is not enough. While the southeast produces a shite load of talent, it really isn't enough to fulfill every school's aspirations. The SEC must import more talent and Arky is well positioned to be a gateway school for the midwest and BB is an ideal coach to tap into it.

I was worried about the fit at first, but we haven't always been a spread offense. Bielema's offense is much closer to what Arkansas has traditionally been than Petrino's.

I was hoping we would get a coach that focuses on the running game, because if there is one position that the state of Arkansas does produce, it's running backs. Just recently we've seen Cedric Cobbs, Mcfadden, Hillis, Dyer, and Tenpenny looks like he will be a good one. We need to take advantage of this.

His B1G record is terrible.

23-1 against Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, and Minnesota and 16-18 against the rest.

He had a GREAT oline the last couple of years with his last oline coach that got hired away. This year without him, the new oline was miserable and the new coach was fired mid-season.

I think he is an average recruiter in a state with not much talent and surrounded by teams like LSU, UT, UTexas, TAMU, and Oklahoma that will make it very hard to get top notch players in his close vicinity.

I don't think Arkansas ever breaks through to top 5 powerhouse type team unless he gets a stud like Johnny Manziel or Cam Newton.
