Over the last 5 seasons, FBS teams were 1-1,692 when trailing by 15 points with less than 5 minutes remaining.. before the Cotton Bowl
His defenses are never good but that was literally a historic collapse. Does USC fire his arse? It’s cool to have high powered offenses, heisman winners, and all that shite but eventually you need to stop somebody

I think Riley has to. This is embarrassing

I have no idea how tf Riley thought it was a good idea to bring him along to LA, he was bad at OU.
And to think he would have brought that fricker to Baton Rouge if that deal worked out

So we're blaming Grinch for the shitty defenses that Lincoln Riley was known for before Grinch even arrived?

There’s no way he can stay. There would be a revolt by the donors who you need more than ever in the NIL era.
USC has minimal talent on defense and I could see that being an excuse if the team got better through the season but they got worse. People blame Riley’s offense for scoring too fast but today was long, methodical drives. You can’t play more defense friendly offense than that. There was never a minute that it crossed my mind that USC might get a stop on that last drive.
One of Riley’s biggest faults is his loyalty to his garbage BBQ buddy assistants so we’ll see

Riley said that he went to USC because he couldn't get enough talent to come to OU. He's only been at USC for one season.
He must think that talent was the issue with the OU defenses or he wouldn't have taken that defensive staff with him to USC.
The defensive coordinator didn't muff a kickoff out of bounds at the one and then give up a safety.

Alex grinch isn't the problem even tho he isn't that great...the problem is Lincoln Riley lacks the physical toughness in his coaching style to win at the high level

Grinch is a Leach guy why Lincoln was able to steal him from Meyer

He turned a Wazzu defense that was the worst maybe ever into an average defense for one year and has made millions at Ohio St, OU, and USC from that while coaching like trash. Pretty impressive.

Never understood the hype around this guy.
Posted on 1/3/23 at 8:33 am to bwallcubfan
USC would be scary AF with just an average D
He has to open the checkbook for transfers to transform the D
I feel bad for Mario Williams because his fumble at the 1 on the kickoff cost them the game

A meaningless bowl game isn't getting him fired.

It didnt look meaningless when they were playing it. Are you saying USC had a ton or opt outs? Are you saying USC didnt care? Or just that its a meaningless game so no one cares?

I thought he was a future star after that year with Leach. I think his first year at OU was OK.
I have no idea why Riley is so enamored with him, at this point. In general the whole "head coach who doesn't care about defense" meme never made sense to me, but it seems like Riley wants super soft (and ineffective) stuff.
I wonder if this is a metrics/analytics thing or what.

Riley wants lots of turnovers and that's how they play. They rip at every ball and go for every pick at the expense of big plays.
It worked for a while against bad teams, but you can't do that and have success against extremely disciplined, well coached teams like Utah and Tulane. It's not sustainable.
Then you couple that with horrible schemes where USC ends up with defensive ends covering TEs and WRs and you end up with the worst defense I've ever seen fielded.

The ball bouncing off the return man was not his fault. Now everything after that might be.
Defense couldn’t handle the pressure. Too much panic.

I remember his first year at oklahoma, the media was touting him as the guy who was going to come in and make those defensive guys play tough and nasty. They seemed so sure

Well, in fairness he did turn around an incredibly bad OU defense under Mike Stoops and made it a top 25-50 defense in year 1. Then LSU happened in the playoffs.
As someone else mentioned, I think his downfall is more on Riley. Wouldn't be surprised to see him bounce back somewhere.

He's going to need to build an elite 1-gap DL, then.
Goes to recruiting rankings...
