According to Miles and some defensive players, Chavis is staying

Reports have surfaced this week that Georgia coach Mark Richt is eyeing Chavis as the Bulldogs’ new defensive coordinator.
Tigers coach Les Miles was emphatic Tuesday when asked about the Chavis-Georgia connection, saying “We have not discussed Georgia in any way. Certainly there’s word out that Georgia has interest, but I have not spoken to Georgia.”
Meanwhile, Chavis has been more enthusiastic than at any time this season, according to a handful of LSU defensive players.
That might have something to do with Chavis’ record against Penn State from his days at Tennessee. Three of the Nittany Lions’ 23 bowl wins under legendary coach Joe Paterno have come at the Volunteers’ expense, all while Chavis was on the UT staff: 42-17 in the 1992 Fiesta Bowl, 31-13 in the 1994 Citrus Bowl and 20-10 in the 2007 Outback Bowl.
“I’ve never seen him this happy since his first day of practice last spring,” Tigers cornerback Patrick Peterson said. “He’s really fired up and I’m excited about that.”
Added senior linebacker Perry Riley, “He definitely wants to win. I don’t know if it’s because it’s his first bowl game at LSU or because of what his last experience was against Penn State. But he’s definitely fired up about this game and wants us to play the way we need to play to get the win.”
Under Chavis, the Tigers defense bounced back from an abysmal 2008 season to rank third in the SEC (12th nationally) in scoring defense with 16 points allowed per game.
There was a consensus when the players were asked if they thought Chavis would leave LSU after one season, summed up best by senior Harry Coleman.
“I would be real surprised if he left,” Coleman said. “He was the key (this season). He got the best out of all of us. It would be real surprising if he left.”
Chavis is scheduled to participate in a news conference today with LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton, tackle Ciron Black and linebacker Kelvin Sheppard.

Max, you are out of touch. We are having a respectable season at #12 and a good chance to finish in the TOP 10. Our defense showed good improvement for year one under the Chief, and you seem to forget that staying in the top 5 every year is hard -- ask OK, SC, TN, GA, ND, MI.

There's only two team on that last that I even remotely give a shite about. GA and TN; and that's because they are SEC. I'm more concerned about how we are stacking up in the West. Nutt beat us, AGAIN. Alabama is getting stronger and Florida, who is perpetually in the top five isn't going anywhere.
I think with the amount of money being thrown at the football program and the way football is being played right now at LSU there is quite a bit to be worried about. I don't enjoy watching us squeek games out against Ark, Tech, MSU, Vandy, and Washington and then lose to Alabama, Florida and Ole Miss. When is the last time you've seen our offense play and were impressed?

if that's the best, then chavis wouldn't be missed around baton rouge if he left.

it takes a little while to unteach "retard" that was drilled into the defense last year. They showed vast improvement in year 1, esp considering our wretched offense had them on the field all damn game. I hope he stays.

There isn't a lot of talent on the defense. On defense, only PP, Chad Jones and Drake Nevis are uber-talented AA potential/type players. Everyone else is either average or a little below average IMO. There has been a talent drop from guys like Beckwith/Highsmith/Dorsey/Spears/B. James/LaRon/Corey Webster/Eric Alexander/Jarvis Green/etc.
I think the gap is about to be made up, but this is that gap that Saban left when we only signed about twelve guys one year and Miles first recruiting class. It has come back to haunt us IMO.
All that being said, I still don't think Chavis is all that great and I wouldn't be sad if he left.

Huh? Blame it on Saban after Miles has been 5 years in the program, right? Saban's players are GONE. Its all Miles and if anyone gets the blame, its either his poor evaluation of talent or development. Or both. Hes taken 4 full classes...the problem should be more than fixed by now. Miles inability to evaluate talent made almost the entire 06 class fall apart due to attrition. So you have a big hole from 05-06...it wasn't just Saban's 05 class that contributed.
LSU has plenty of depth with a lot of young guys that are potential stars. If they don't develop...LSU needs to do a better job in evaluation. I can name several questionable players Miles gave a ship over better instate talent that left.
