yea i see your point on the surface. But that was nearly 10 years ago. Lets face it, outside of recruiting, Les Miles left a lot to be desired. I think O is a lot like Miles in some capacity; will recruit his arse off and represent the program in an honorable manner. Yet will let his coaches do his job. And if he has the right coaches, they will put our top notch in position to win. Isn't this what everyone thought was wrong with Miles? I know that was the case with me.
Im not ready to say i want to hire the guy, he's 3rd or 4th on my realistic list right now, but so far he has done everything right. The way he is still recruiting is going to go a long way with the administration.

Again i see your point, but the guy has been a coach for a long time. And has been a recruiting coordinator at USC, Tenn, and at LSU. Being a recruiting coordinator these days is almost more important to building a program then being a good OC or DC.
I just think he has the potential to be a good fit with the way he recruits. Could he go to another school and say that same thing? Probably not. But at LSU?? Great fit in this state to attract players. It's really hard to frick up when you have great players and you can motivate them, and I think he can do that.

O would require top notch coordinators. And those guys hop around and obviously many are candidates for HC positions.
LSU has a chance to really make the next bug hire for the next 10 years.
Largely agree with all of this. But even if LSU looks at and cannot come to terms with a list of elite candidates like: Fisher, Herman, Chip, Patterson, etc... even then you have an absolute star coordinator ON STAFF that you would be passing over to hire Oregeron. I would have to hear Aranda say on camera that he does not want the job.
And for me, even that doesn't make Orgeron a better choice than potential hires like Whittingham, Fedora, Fleck, Venables, or Fuente. Functionally my list of coaches before you start to prioritize Oregeron is more than two handfuls.

I get what you are saying, O would be a risk. Thing is Herman would be a risk, heck Jimbo would be safer but no guarantee. A new head coach would want to bring his own coaching staff and that can be very risky.
Heck Charlie Strong was supposed to be a home run hire for Texas, as Kelly was also at Notre Dame. No matter who LSU hires there will be a risk envolved . Thing to also think about is how much money and for what length will the contract be for?
I still think Herman or Fisher would be great hires, I'm not totally sold on coach O yet, but if he runs the table and could communicate a good plan going forward he would be considered at the very least.
Man this is going to be big for LSU, I hope they get it right.

I think the evidence for that is rather the opposite. Guys like Spurrier, Chip, and Petrino are famously reluctant recruiters but still elevated their programs to previously unheard of levels of success.

There are pros and cons to O, no doubt. I just worry about longevity. LSUs stock is so high right now with all of these recruiting classes, Fournette being a household name, etc
It just feels like settling to me if O gets the job. But I can assure you if he is named, he will get my full support. I want LSU to win and if they won a title with a Cajun as a HC....Idk if it could get any better.

I agree. Hell, I may get shite on for saying this, but I firmly believe Saban is a better coach than recruiter. His accomplishments basically sell themselves now. And he has surrounded himself with top notch recruiters as well.
I like a HC that recruits. But we've been there and done that. I'd like one that is a pure Xs and Os guy who understands he needs to recruit and even more importantly, hire great recruiters.

Herman
Orgeron
Peterson (don't really fall into the realistic category I guess)

It was mentioned in ramdomlsuhero's post that orgeron would possibly bring in kiffin as an OC... if this were to fall through, how would y'all feel about art briles as the OC? I'm not advocating hiring him, just wanted to gauge where the board felt about having him as an OC, instead of a head coach

Interesting.. I honestly like Petrino.. he'd be a no brainer if it weren't for all his 'baggage'... he'd be my number three for sure.. fleck intrigues me as a second tier candidate, but I don't really know too much about him..
I also think it's not that far fetched to think that orgeron could be very successful here given the right coordinators

I would have almost considered this a month ago. Now I am like WTF are you even thinking. Are you outside your mind? He lost to SMU and a Navy team that just got beat by South Florida. People don't seem to realize how bad it is for a team that was ranked a short time ago to lose to SMU. shite, people don't realize how bad it is for a team like North Texas in Denton to lose to SMU.

How many times has a head coach had to do this? Les was here for a while I don't remember him ever having to take over for a coordinator. Never heard of Nick Saban having to do it.
Couldn't O just call somebody and say "Hey the guy we were paying over a million bucks is gone. Want a shot?"
